now i'm not sure what is wrong so bear with me please. i had a swizzor virus in my system restore information and on my c drive. i cleaned it from my c drive and used safe mode to delete from my registry. the pc was working great and saw no problem.

now this morning my pc took a long time to boot, i had a message asking me to use the previous configuration (i shut down system restore with aforementioned swizzor capers though made a system restore once running again). my windows update made me restart my comp after a panic thinking the pc was not working. on restarting i met the same long wait and once in i ran windows update. i had 7 critical updates and 2 XP updates. my live update for norton took consiuderably longer and i kept getting a message that KB<insert numbers> was replaced by an unrecognized file. i clicked ok in the end a few times as it was the only way to rid the windows.

now what i'm thinking is, is there a way to insert the XP Home disc and choose to repair files lost or corrupt? what command do i type in start>run?

    thanks in advance.

EDIT: i ran the sfc /scannow option that PeteC gave in another thread, i hope this is sufficient.

    Try this :-
Boot from the WinXP CD (in the BIOS boot sequence put the CD drive ahead of the HDD). When the first message comes up, choose "To set up WinXP" by pressing enter. Windows will eventually recognise that XP is installed and ask what you want to do, press R to repair (not the first R for recovery console) and follow the instructions.

i booted from the cd-rom and whilst it was loading the data (before any option to set up XP) i got a message 'the file ftdisk.sys is corrupted' :( . i had to press a key which rebooted as it normally does but is still taking longer than yesterday.

EDIT: just tried to play a game and realised the pc never recognised my cd-rom (D:) so did a system restore to half an hour previous. don't know if that was linked the the ftdisk.sys error? it is up again now. i'm finding spyware with every restart aswell. i run ad aware, spybot, full versions of spysweeper and pestpatrol.

Tenchy - it sounds like you are still loaded with bad stuff.

Get a copy of Hijackthis (see quicklinks in my signature) and put it in a folder of it's own (so not a temp folder and not directly on the desktop - maybe a new folder c:\hjt or something).

Close all open windows and run hijackthis. When it finishes the scan you will have a button change labels to let you save a log file. Do that and a log will open in notepad. Post the entire log here. It may take several posts if it's too long for one but we need the whole thing.

Moving this to the security section.

    Hi trenchy,

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe "

Unless you're truely in love with Plus, get rid of it - it is spyware in and of itself and if you read the EULA, you'll find it shares data with others. Probably the source of the stuff SSD and Ad-Aware keep finding.

Your reference to SP2 is puzzling, unless you installed XP's SP2 beta versions.

What you might be seeing are MS updates - post SP1 patches are labeled SP2.

Go thru your startups in these sites:

thank you charles "¦ no msg plus I really do not take notice of apart from the ability to tell folk I really AM away from the computer and not hiding. No big hassle to lose it as they can talk to themselves if they persist if it keeps them happy .

I got rid of it after I got a pop up window stating something like

The sponsor installation package was corrupted!

You’re getting this error because some files were deleted either manually or by an automatic advertisement removal software, thius preventing the real uninstallation program to do it’s job.

Messenger plus! Will now try to repair some of this damage in order to uninstall the sponsor properly. If that doesn’t work try to reinstall messenger plus! With the sponsor and launch the uninstall again. All complaints should be sent to the creators of the automatic advertisement removal software that was used.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
I uncheck/check the box to NOT accept the sponsors but the amount of updates they bombard you with is ridiculous. I hope things work better now. I bookmarked each of those links for future reference as it is late at night and this has me worn out.

    Thanks charles

EDIT: i'm told other than yourself charles that SP2 is not out yet but i was 99% sure it was SP2 i had which i obtained through windows update. maybe my paranoid brain is working overtime as i never gave it a thought until this swizzor caper. so i'll see how it goes over the next few days, i'll run my pestpatrols and spysweepers like i'm on a mission and see if things clear up.

    In addition
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe - your Sun Java is two versions out of date. Important to keep that current so Here to get the update although the site will be down for maint. for a while tomorrow (Saturday, July 31) so you need to get it today or wait until after the maint. window.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CM-SmWizard] C:\WINDOWS\System\SmWizard.exe - from C-Media AC97 Audio Device from C-Media Electronics Inc but no one can quite figure out what it does. Possible spyware and removal hasn't seemed to hurt any systems so I suggest renaming the .exe to smwizard.exe-old and running hijackthis with all other windows closed and removing that entry.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrustInstaller] D:\Setup.exe - can't find any info on this one but unless you know exactly what it is and unless you are sure you want it, I'd be inclined to get rid of an entry that was running setup every time I opened my browser. Same recommendation as for SmWizard since if you later find you need either of them you can just rename the .exe and they should become available to you again.

i renamed a file called setup with the exe-old but on running hijackthis, the trustinstaller was still there. i suspect that it my keyboard which had a disc for installing and is a trust product. the computyer seems to be taking an age from the windows XP screen it goes black for a lot longer until the pc kicks in.

smwizard is still there so maybe i should re relabel the setup as exe.old and restart getting hijack info? i can't make head nor tail of it all

    Hi Tenchy.

Close all browser windows and shut down all other programs that show in the taskbar.
Run HijackThis and place a check next to these.

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...arch.yahoo.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...fo/bt_side.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...arch.yahoo.com/

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrustInstaller] D:\Setup.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CM-SmWizard] C:\WINDOWS\System\SmWizard.exe

You can also check all the 016's. They'll come back if needed.
    Then Hit fix checked.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders.

    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

    Click OK.

Open D:\Setup.exe and rename setup.exe Setup.001 (to be on the safe side)
    Open C:\WINDOWS\System\SmWizard.exe and delete SmWizard.exe
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

everything deleted apart from a file 'IMToday'

could not get it to run

also i forgot to run hijackthis so i will post this, shut down, run hijack with all programs shut off.

    Tenchy,
Looks good to me  If you don't already have IESpyads I'd download and install it. Gives you a little more protection. Also keep Ad-Aware and Spybot updated.

Lets know if you need anymore help :)
