I'm trying to sort out my system tray. My mouse software loads first and my firewall last. I used Poledit in Win98 and was told to use gpedit.msc but I can't find where I do this. The 'Run These Programs At User Logon' wasn't configured and enabling it and trying to get it to run another program at startup doesn't work. I want to see the list of programs that it loads and sort it. Where is it?

gpedit.msc - XP-pro only and not found on XP-home. Not sure if it will even run on XP-home if you put a copy on the Hd.

Sorry, should have said. It is XP Pro I'm running on both my Laptop and Desktop.

I've run Startup Control Panel and it has allowed me to get rid of the rubbish but I need to change theorder in which the tray now loads?

Why? I don't know of a way of doing that. The random order in which items in the tray load has puzzled, but not bothered, me too.

I look forward to an explanation and possible solution - if indeed the load order has any significance :)

It takes 1 minute to load the firewall. I assume in this period the pc is open to attack. As my mouse, digital camera & virus software load first I wish to get the firewall to load first.

A moot point, but from where?

AFAIK until you have fired up Internet Explorer you are not connected to the Internet, even though your ADSL line - I assume you are on Broadband to be posing this question - is synchronised, and that takes a little time on boot. My system on BT Broadband does not connect to the Internet until I hit the IE icon or Send/Receive in Outlook Express.

    PeteC,
I don't know about the BT Broadband, but with my ISP, Charter Cable, when your pc is on you're online, one can watch the incoming / outgoing traffic through the Sygate Firewall. Of course my ISP is usually the one trying to scan my pc, which they say they are only checking to see if I'm online.

    LD,

I am new to broadband (2 weeks) and possibly naive in this area, but on boot up my modem does not indicate synchronisation until after the firewall is loaded. So I guess I am protected either way?

As soon as Win XP Pro is loaded it is open to attack. However, Zonealarm say that their program loads right after win XP so the PC is protected. It's just the User Interface that loads later.

Zone Alarm and window's native firewall are both loaded as a service. It's always been my understanding that services are loaded before the OS so if your firewall loads as a service you should be protected. As dishon said, with Zone Alarm, the tray icon that loads after windows is running is just part of the user interface. It's not an indicator of the firewall itself being loaded. I suspect Kerio and some if not all of the others are probably the same.
