AGP Setting is 4x but sys is capable of 8x. How do i change this (from 4x to 8x)?

My BIOS Video Configuration only has settings for either AGP or PCI.

    Info provided (via EVEREST).
When i run "EVEREST" it says "Current AGP speed is lower than maximum supported. This may cause performance penalty ".

Computer Operating System: XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack: Service Pack 1
    DirectX 4.09.00.0900 (DirectX 9.0)
    Motherboard
    CPU Type Intel Pentium 4HT, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Motherboard Name: Intel Bonanza D875PBZ (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 4 DIMM, LAN)
    Motherboard Chipset: Intel Canterwood i875P
System Memory: 1024 MB (DDR SDRAM)
    BIOS Type: AMI (04/28/03)
    AGP Properties
    AGP Version: 3.00
    AGP Status: Enabled
    AGP Aperture Size: 64 MB
    Supported AGP Speeds: 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x
    Current AGP Speed: 4x

    thanks,

video adapter = GeForce Ti 4200, 128 MB, with integrated RAMDAC. I dont know where to check if the card is 8x.

    Motherboard is: Intel Pentium 4HT, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
    Motherboard Name: Intel Bonanza D875PBZ

    Anisotropic filtering shows 2x,4x,8x.
    Antialiasing shows 2x, 2xQ,4x and 4xS.

    thanks for the comeback,

Do you have your mobo manual, or can you find it online? My AGP needed increased from 2X to 4X and I did it in BIOS. Can't honestly say I noticed any difference at all, after the change, though.

    Johanna,

Both Intel and Gateway sites were confusing and giving to many replies
    to a search. So,
Think this may be the problem?? It appears the AGP Slot will only support up to 4x
while the chipset is 8x capable. Again, this extract from Evereast report.

    [ System Slots / J6C1 ]

    System Slot Properties:
    Slot Designation J6C1
    Type AGP 4x
    Usage In Use
    Data Bus Width 32-bit
    Length Long

    CHIPSET:
    AGP Properties:
    AGP Version 3.00
    AGP Status Enabled
    AGP Aperture Size 64 MB
    Supported AGP Speeds 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x
    Current AGP Speed 4x
    Fast-Write Supported, Enabled
    Side Band Addressing Supported, Enabled

Do you have the handbook that came with the Vid card? What manufacturer made the card...ie Belarc shows my card as [NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600] but it was manufactured by Asus.

You also should, if your running drivers from nVidia, tell what AGP the card is under Dispaly settings.

    1) Settings Tab
    2) Click "Advanced" button
    3) See if you have a tab called GeForce Ti 4200
    4) If you do select it
    5) Under "Adapter Information "...Under Bus: Mine says AGP 4x

    Interesting,
    I have a Leadtek Ti4200 128MB card that is 8x.
I did have to tell my Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro 2 motherboard that the video card was of the 8x variety.
I also run the Nvidia reference drivers as apposed to the Leadtek ones that caused instability at day 1.
You may be right Kent, perhaps some Ti4200 cards were 4x only. I didn't think they were???
I am suprised if the 4600 was optioned as 4x though!

Think your video card may be 4X. Everest is probably saying that the motherboard supports 8X and you could upgrade if you want to.

If the suggestions to find the video card's make and model don't work, the model number will be printed on the card itself. Type the model number and "specifications" into a Google search. It is good to know all the details of your hardware anyway. Have a look at the manufacturer's information about the card, you may find updates, etc.

    Matt
(dobhar, interested to know what you think of those drivers).

The display properties (settings>advanced>GeForce4 Ti4200>BUS does
say 4X. Is this just what the card is currently running at or is it the max
    allowed?

I'll see what i can find based on the model number at nvidia.

    thanks, guys,

    D875PBZ motherboard manual:
    http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/D875PBZ/sb/CS-008951.htm

Does not state how the AGP settings are done, but if there is nowhere in the BIOS settings to manually change them, then it should be done automatically...meaning that it has identified your video adapter as a 4X.

    Matt

PS Some settings that you can "tweak" are AGP Aperture Size and Frame Buffer Size. These run on your system memory and since your have a lot (1024mb) you can increase those values. May give you a slight increase in performace or at least not restrict the performance using those default settings.

    Mattman,
thanks for the feedback! Clears it up some.
When you say change the AGP Aperturee size (How?) when ilook at my
BIOS there is only AGP or PCI as settings. It is 64 now and it does slow
me down. I should be able to set it to 128 but i dont know how to do this.

    thanks again,
    savagcl

I'm pretty sure that you have a 4x card.
Not a problem though as late 4x cards and early 8x cards show very little difference.

    Hi Kent,
Yes I have installed the 61.77 drivers on XP and W2k3. They work fine. But I'm no gamer so can't quote frame rate improvements/problems with them. ;)

Interesting though with XP and my hardware. With some previous versions including 61.76 only released a few days before 61.77 the screen would flash to black a couple of times in quick succession as soom as the SVGA desktop loaded then was fine after that. With v61.77 this no longer happens. It's possibly due to this version being DirextX 9.0c complient, as I also have that loaded. Dunno?

savagcl, you mention Gateway so you may have an OEM version of that motherboard with a "cut-down" BIOS.

I found that Gateway call that motherboard the Intel Wasp. There are documents etc here:
    http://support.gateway.com/support/supinfo/index.asp?pg=2&file=dt_mot111.html
You need to know if it R0, R1 or R2 though.

Do the Gateway system identification here:
    http://support.gateway.com/support/pctools.asp

Let us know how you go.

Paul, I get the same screen blackout when I hit the desktop. I am pretty sure that it is the "video control panel" software taking control of the video settings away from Windows.

    Paul,
    coupla small ones -
where is the 9.0c located? Has it been signed or is it a Beta?

I have the 61.76 and once in a while, it appears as if the screen will blink,
kinda like a refresh. Did the 61.77 take care of that?

    thanks,

    Hi Paul...

Well I finally loaded the 61.77 drivers and all is well.

I've never noticed the "flashing" problem that you mentioned with my older drivers. I also ran the Directx Diagnostic Tools (DXDIAG.EXE) and it tells me that I already have Directx 9.0c. I figure it got installed with my XP SP2 RC2 upgrade.

    MATTMAN,

Definately have the WASP MB. Got the docs and need to review them.
I bought a SATA-RAID system from GW and it worked good until i had to
reload XP from scratch. No more RAID. Maybe these will help me figure it
    out.

Think the card must be 4X max. I plan to upgrade the graphics card soon
    (sooner, the better).

Dont mind re-loading everything if it get me back the speed i saw before.

    thanks for the links,
