    Hello martinr121,

I wouldn't depend on the installation history to tell you what is installed - it's a good indication, but thats all. For exmaple, lets say you did a reinstall, that history would still be there. Its the scan that should be the accurate indicator.

That history then can be used as a guide for that hypothetical user that reinstalled the OS and wants a list of what they installed on the old OS.

Just as I would use the download only history from the Catalog site for the same purpose if I didn't keep the setup files.

    Regards - Charles

EDIT: Christer, your post tells me that I've made a wrong assumption. The eviedence is that the actual list is on the user's system.

You can tell I've never reinstalled my OSes, never had to - knock on wood :)

    Charles,
For me, the purpose of going through the trouble of downloading and installing manually is exactly to keep them in my personal update library for XP-pro. Then I don't have to go on-line to retrieve them again if the need should arise.

In addition to that, there are the "fringe benefits ": You can't imagine how many pints of brew I have been served on a silver tray for bringing that CD to people with modem connections ...... ...... !

A few Forehead slaps - Thanks, didn't think of that. It would tell hawk just what MS upates are on his system. By his description - over 5 hours "downloading" - I think all those updates were applied.

    Another app like it http://www.belarc.com/Download.html

    Hi martinr,

    Do you have an example?

My experience is that every update I've installed is recognized by the scan - I "update" like Christer does, thru the Catalog site. It also "sees" the fact that I've "rolled" back or uninstalled an update.

In the case of the "rollback" - using system Restore, the log would get rolled back as well. In the case of uninstalling thru the Add/Remove, I don't know what happens to the log. Now that I know where it is, in the future can monitor that.

In any case, with the new update - we can all start again :)

    Regards - Charles

    Start>Run > cmd
    qfecheck /v

Don't thank me- from my notes, and I give the credit to Newt.

Any potential danger in installing this Patch from MS as it tells you before installing to back up system and all.
It appears that I have to download again and install, I checked out all the items mentioned in the very interesting discussions but I still only come up with the one
    KB837009 that installed.
I would agree with, that for what we have to pay for Windows MS should be able to screen our OS and tell us what we have and what we need in regards to updates to keep our investment safe.
keep up the good work guy's

Not a patch - a proggy. No danger, have it installed myself. Back up etc, is standard wording to cover MS if it - or any installation be it from MS or elsewhere fouls up your system.

But you have a back up anyway, don't you ?? :D

    Hi Hawk

The problem is what was going on for 5 hours if this was only one update.

From what I remember - the MS update has two phases, first "download" and then "installation" and clearly labeled as such on-screen.

I stopped doing updates this way not only because I wanted to keep the setup file, but, like you am on a dialup and always there was the possibility that the connection would break. That happened a few times and caused problems if the connection would break in the installation phase. Then, depending on where the break occured, couldn't get the process started again beacause the update was already "installed ". System Restore would cure that, but what a PIA.

    Regards - Charles

"Belarc Advisor" tells you everything that is inside and outside of that grey box and I MEAN EVERYTHING :) Get it at Belarc.com. Click on Free Download.
It lists every hotfix and update, the date installed and the details.

A goooood source for info about everything. Joe R

Anyone who bought their os copy prior to 2003 may not have it and prior to 18 Jan 2002 will certainly not have it.

Belarc and Everest show a lot more. qfecheck, AFAIK, doesn't list IE criticals, not a least with the syntax /v

The rational I assume is that the Browser is not strictly an XP component.

Interesting... I searched my XP Pro cd, with no luck, to find Qfecheck. Was it added by one of the 80 some updates, patches and SPs??? I am positive I never downloaded it- because I never heard of it until the other day, when it was mentioned in another thread. I do have Qfecheck, though, and it works. Another MS mystery...
