    gerty--Not sure I understand 100%.
    1) Have you tried just dragging the various icons away from each other?
    2) Or right click on an empty part of the Desktop|Arrange Icons|Auto Arrange. (If Auto Arrange is already checked, uncheck it and try 1) again.)
I guess the part that confuses me is
    .
If the above suggestions do not help, please give some more detail on the difference between how they originally looked and how they look now.

You've got it, everyone running ME does. Its a "hidden" file located in C:\WINDOWS.

To "see" it - bring up the drive > Folder options > View tab > scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders > tick "show hidden files and folders ".

Set a manual restore point in System Restore and then delete it. The System should recreate. This file gets corrupted from time to time.

Whether this will solve this particular problem, I don't know.

    Regards - Charles

gerty--Do a Find for shelliconcache, delete it and reboot. If you cannot find shelliconcache, click Start|Settings| Folder Options|View tab|Hidden Files section|Fill in the circle next to "Show all Files "|Apply|OK. Now run Find again.
Did you try the Auto Arrange suggestion?
And I am a little surprised that you cannot hook an edge of the Briefcase icon and drag it off the other icons. And do you mean all four (or more) icons are all in one, tight, heap on your Desktop? How do you know what is under the Briefcase icon?

    Hi gerty,
Have you tried making a New shortcut on the desktop just to see what happens? Start> Programs> Right Click on any program> Send to Desktop create shortcut.
