Thanks for the reminder Newt - I am so used to seeing file extensions - always set up WE up that way on any PC I touch - to show extensions.

    Having a bad week I fear :(

Been there, had those, got a drawer full of the t-shirts. Newt

Made "safest way" changes and ran TrendMicro. Pulled up 4 files:

    Java-Bytever-A-1
    Java-Bytever-A-1
    Troj. Strtpage IX
    Troj. Strtpage IX

Assuming these could be the initial cause for file deletion through Hijack This? In any event, they were deleted.

On reboot she powers up normally. I've done this half a dozen times, both from restart and a cold boot. I'm almost scared to say it, but the laptop seems to be working just fine.

    Anything else I should do?

BTW: Your photos are marvelous. For me, they connect with xrays. As xrays probe the internal structures, your photos seem to do the same for the land. They also have a wonderful luminous quality to them, much like the surreal juxtiposition in poetry. Good stuff, indeed.

    Thanks again!

Surprised to see those viruses appearing - the (several) reformat(s) would have cleaned the disk completely, but your definitions were inevitably not up to date when you first connected to the internet.- I hope they are now!

For complete peace of mind run an online virus scan from RAV (via Quicklinks) and an online Trojan scan here

Do you have a firewall installed/activated? The Windows XP firewall is off by default (will be on by default in SP2). If you have not loaded a firewall activate the XP firewall - Control Panel > Network connections > right click on the Dialup Connection to your ISP > Properties > Advanced and check the box for the firewall.

Finally visit Windows Update - if you have not already done so and apply ALL the Critical Updates on offer - ignore any driver offerings.

Glad you liked the images on my web site - I love your description of them!

Glad to be of assistance - sorry it turned out a bit long winded, not having a good week - and it is only Tuesday :)

I've run most of the programs on the quicklist and they picked out a couple more files that were either cleaned or deleted. Everything still functioning ok.

The programs that do no need an internet connection AdAware, SpyBot, etc.......is it better the run them in SafeMode?

When I click My Computer, I'm showing 2 hard drives. C: and E:. Is there any way to get rid of the one that's not being used? Or is that even possible?

Spybot and Ad-aware only need a connection to update - you can run them on-line/off-line in normal mode. Configure Ad-aware as shown here and make sure both are fully updated.

Drive E: is best left alone - in theory it holds Dell's diagnostice - maybe, maybe not now. However it can be hidden.

    Download TweakuiXP from Microsoft.

In TweakuiXP go to My Computer > Drives and uncheck E: You will see it no more although it is still present of course. You can also use TweahuiXP to remove those annoying - to me at least - curly arrows on new shortcuts - Explorer > Shortcut. plus many other tweaks.

Out now -another sick PC - until about 2 pm your time.

    Pete,

Gotcha on all counts. Can't thank you enough for all your help. Been a learning experience, that's for sure. I'm hoping the laptop continues to function properly, but if it doesn't, it's good to know folks like yourself are out there with the answers.

    Hope your week improves!

    All best,
    Whompus

Thank you - it has already. Your problems seem to be solved and the 'patient' I attended this evening is also in robust health now.

Just remember we are a only a few clicks away and always willing to help out :)
