I had to reformat the hard disk and use the restoration disc that I received when the computer was new. Everything is fine except when I go to shutdown the computer, it begins to shutdown but never gets to the "It is now safe to turn your computer off" sign. The screen always says, windows is shutting down.

If I do not do anything, it will just sit there, sort of time out and start to reboot itself. My alternative is to hold the power button in for 4 seconds and the computer will turn off, but when I reboot, I get the message that because windows was not shut down properly, scan disk has to check all my files, etc.

Is there a setting I have to change to exit windows properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Windows 95 shutdown problem

    LT,

Thanks for the welcome aboard and many thanks for the interesting article. My biggest fear was that all of the Windows95 guru's had moved on to greener pastures. I appreciate you taking the time to point me in the right direction. I'm sure my problem is in there somewhere. I suspect it might have something to do with the graphics board that I installed, it's an aftermarket device from I/O Magic and I did get a message saying that the monitor driver was not configured properly but I can't find any documentation on it so I don't know how it should be configured.

At one point I upgraded my OS to windows 98 and the computer ran very well for years with the 98 OS. I don't know what happened to my Windows 98 disc but it's not in this house. The 95 restore disc is all I have.

I raised 5 children, they're all out of the house and on their own now but, as they left, things sort of left with them. I lost my collection of Indiana Jones tapes also.

I will print the article out and start from the beginning.

    Thanks again for your help.

    John,

    John,
I'm no guru by any means, but there are a few on this board that are darn good :)
That very well could be an issue. Have you tried to find updated drivers for it? If not, you can post the details of the card, like ATI 9600 pro. Another thing we should do is scandisk and defrag in safe mode. Shutdown, then restart the computer, when it begins to start, start taping the F8 key until you get a menu with choices. We want Safe Mode. After windows starts click on Start> Move mouse pointer to Programs> then Accessories> then System Tools> click on ScanDisk. You want to do a through scan and auto fix. After that is finshed:
Start> Move mouse pointer to Programs> then Accessories> then System Tools> click on Disk Defragmenter. Select C: drive. When thats finished, Start shutdon>restart. See if that helps. Then we need to try and find an updated driver for the video card. One other thing is a Windows Update. Keep in mind that Scandisk and Defrag might take some time to run. Brew a fresh pot of coffee / tea.
