I get a blue screen with error message: fatal exception 0E at 0028:C02A026C in VXD VWIN32(05) + 00000BF4.

After I press any key the computer hangs. I aslo get an error on msgsr32. I can't use windows in normal mode.

    Thanks.

    Try a scanreg/restore. Boot the system and just after the POST (Power On Self Test) hold down either the Ctrl or F8 key. This should give you the Microsoft Boot Menu. Choose "Command Prompt Only ". Once you get the C:\> prompt, type in;
    scanreg/restore

and pick a date ~prior~ to the problem starting. (You should have a choice of up to five dates.) This will replace your registry and the main windows boot files with backups.

Make sure to leave a space in the command, between scanreg and /restore. :)

I already tried that and it didn't work. I did it twice. And I also tried unchecking the elements at startup in msconfig, except for antivirus' and sys tray and power profile. I had to do that in safe mode. Then I entered in normal mode and there still was the blue screen, but windows didn't freeze after that -only that once-. When i tried to read windows cd it froze and had to restart the pc, and then again couldn't start windows anymore.

What should I try now? I don't even have cd drive when i start in dos.

    Nice catch Dave.

veronicao, can you tell us what all you've tried? SFC, scandisk, etc.

    Hi veronicao...

Did you recently install some new hardware like a printer, scanner, or Digial Camera?

I didn't do scandisk. It's a computer that has a regular connection to internet at university; it never had problems before, but at some point it had too many things and it was necesary to format it and reinstall the programs. Somebody else here did it so I don't know what he changed, but after that problems started little by little. IE, error messages, etc., but nothing was so serious. I did install a digital camera at usb port, but it was also installed before the computer was formatted, and as I said, there weren't any problems then. I installed an old impact printer too, but it is not local but net connected printer.

What other information can I give you?

I'll keep trying booting with a floppy in the meantime.

The Msgsvr32 error message at startup could be one of two things.
Both of these are loaded early in the startup process.
You have an incorrect or corrupted driver file for your network card.
Your AV program is corrupted, which one are you using?

Norton's products are garbage. I've had nothing but bad luck with their stuff. Dump Norton and get AVG.

    Shadowhawk,
That wasn't a constructive comment. Just because you haven't "been lucky" (your words) with Norton products does not mean they are not suitable for someone else, or that they are "garbage ". If you feel like bashing Norton, start a new thread and list some objective reasoning.

Now the computer is working fine again and i'll tell what I've done in case this is useful for someone else.

I reinstalled windows and didn't help. I did it again just in case and nothing. I checked the cards on the cpu and video card was a bit loose, but that didn't seem to be part of the problem. I got another video card from another computer, I changed it, restarted the pc and this time I didn't get the blue screen, but still had other windows error messages. So I completely moved windows directory to a different one, so that when I reinstalled it the older wouldn't affect the new one, and reinstalled again. I observed the card carefully and there didn't seem to be any components burned, so I cleaned the contacts just in case, although they didn't have anything wrong visible.

Still using the borrowed card, when installation was complete I restarted the computer and this time I had absolutely no problems.

Then I changed again cards and could make the corresponding one work. So the only thing left to do was fix things regarding the other programs, such as broken links, dll files, etc. Maybe one or two of them need to be reinstalled now but the rest of the computer is working perfectly. I hope all this can help someone else.

Thank you very much to all of you for the help.

    Verónica.
