Dstu - Welcome to the Board :)

Have you tried a System Restore to a date prior to your problems?

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

I'm going out right now to give mouth to mouth to a dying Win 98 m/c - in the meantime no harm in running System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > OK - note the space and have your XP install CD handy.

SFC will run and exit without any indication of which files, if any have been replaced. To see this info right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > System if you are interested.
