Some have reported the problem you're having being the result of something called "Search Assistant" find its way into your computer.

Look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs for "Search Assistant" and if found, uninstall it.

I too have been having this problem on a couple of pc's. Except I want the quick launch gone and my double wide task bar to stay double. I have gotten some "relief" by using the Rebuild Icon function in TweakUI.

Going to keep an eye out for this search assistant also!

Just wanted to mention the obvious, for anyone else reading this thread: are you sure "Lock the Taskbar" is checked?

    Hello Bob,

Has to be unlocked first - added - then locked if you want. I don't bother locking it.

    Regards - Charles

My quick launch is also missing. I do not have the Search Assistant program nor does locking the taskbar help. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

On that right click to properties, in the "Taskbar" tab, do you have "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" checked, and "Auto hide the taskbar" unchecked? Just checking. try toggling them, and reboot, see what happens.

    bobm735,

Judging by some of the entries in your HJT log currently in the security section, my guess is that your quick launch problems may be because of a VX2 infection, and will deal with that there. :)

    Mike,

So we can rule that out for you, copy and paste the following command into the address bar then hit enter.

    javascript:navigator.userAgent

Copt the text of the resulting window and paste it here.

    Bob,

Post those results to your security thread please. :) I'm tired and will work on a reply for you tomorrow if no-one else has by then.

    Goodnight.

    Dave,

    Here you go: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax)

    Hope that helps!

    Bob,

As I said, I wanted you to post those results to your HijackThis thread so it's available to me there. Your results show that there is a VX2 infection on your machine also, and we'll deal with that after doing some of the other cleanups. I also asked Mike to paste that command into his browser, and post the results here so that I could see if he had the same problem. As it turns out, his results are OK. No VX2 present, so his Quick Launch problem may be different than your's. Yet to be determined though. :)

    Hi Dave...

You got bob to run the "javascript:navigator.userAgent" command...how does his results tell you that bob is infected with VX2?

His results were "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; {63936A26-B21F-4F0E-9EEE-700050020F15}; yie6_SBC; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) ". I'm assuming it's the bolded line that tells you.

My results are "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)" and I can see the difference.

Just inquiring...need to add more ammo to my "nasties" fighting arsenal.

    Hi Kent. :)

Yes, it's the CSLID, {63936A26-B21F-4F0E-9EEE-700050020F15}, that throws up the red flag. Google it. ;) This, yie6_SBC, I believe is SBC yahoo (looks like a good educated guess huh? ). This, .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322, two different versions of Netscape.

Notice Mike's has some other strange looking entries? Googling the whole string will produce a link to here, a good place to check valid popular browsers.

    Hi All,

I ran across a fix for me. I found the answer on the Microsoft newsgroup and it was posted by Kelly Theriot. Along with the taskbar fix, listed in another post below, there is a manual fix given. This worked for me.

Using Regedit, navagate to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon. In the right pane, scroll down to Userinit and change the value to C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe.

I applied this change and rebooted twice and my quick launch stayed on the taskbar. Maybe the Kelly link provided before does the same thing, but I went the amnaul way to start.

    Mike
