During Netscape 7.1 setup, the program asks whether I want to save the installer files locally. If I choose "Yes ", the so-called installer files are placed into C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Setup; but, Netscape will never reinstall from those files. It always wants an internet connection from which to download the installation and will not install without it.

So, what is the purpose of saving the installer files locally?

Is there a way to get Netscape to install from those saved installer files?

Sounds like you were using a small installer (net installer, OR called "stub ") and you need to use that installer to gather more components you want to use.

Ideally, saving them gives you an option without re-downloading the same components.

To be honest, I haven't played with those net installers much. By, I would suggest downloading the full installer, or the standalone version which can save you lots of trouble.

    Hi Alex

You have two option types when downloading.....

    1) Download the complete file to your HD. When download completes you can immediately install or install at a later date. Generally several MB's in size

    2) Download "Installer files ", which is a very tiny program (200 - 300 Kb) download / install program. Once installed, it must return to internet and download Netscape program files (several MB's) to be installed. It will automatically install the program during this process.... can NOT install at a later date. No install file saved locally for later reinstall... must return to Internet and repeat the process.

No right or wrong for either choice. Most prefer to download the complete file and install at their lesure... and have the install program available for reinstalls if necessary.

:D Darn .... Antony beat me to it. :D

Thanks, I never noticed that obscure little link.

I still don't understand the purpose of that option to "Save setup files" locally during the "stub" setup. But, I guess understanding that isn't important , now.

    Alex,

That option to save the XPIs locally as you download them, is so you can make changes later if you want. I found this tidbit of info when NS 6 was released, from Asa Dotzler:

This is basically what Antony said:
