My sister's computer is running Win 98SE. I cleand out a BUNCH of temp files, cookies and other "garbage" for her. When running Defrag, it goes to 65% then drops back down to 57%. It has done this at least three times not going any further than 65%, then dropping back down to 57% back up to 65% again. What could the problem be?

Ran Scandisk BEFORE Defrag and it finishes just fine.

The problem corrected itself. I simply let it run then went do an errand. When I got back 20 minutes later, it had completed 100%.

To help speed up defragging, disconnect yourself from the internet (if Broadband or DSL) and disable antivirus. Remember to re-enable AV after defragging.

You probably had one large file on the drive causing this. To defrag it, it must be moved around, it is during this time that the percentage is jumping around. This is normal for 98 defrag and a file at least 75 mb, and it would not be Win386.Swp doing this as it doesn't get defragged.
