I have Windows XP Home installed and I was thinking of getting an upgrade of my M/Board,chip,put in more memory. Will I have to re-activate XP Home?...If so,is it easy to do this.It was easy enough to activate when I first got it but I heard that you have to go to the hassle of phoning Microsoft to re-activate.Is this correct?

I did the same changes, and you will have to activate by telephone. It isn't difficult, just be in front of your computer, up and running, when you telephone Microsoft.

    Thanks Roger.

Another Question just to make sure I've read the activation info correct.

If I want to re install my Windows XP Home that I have on just now I WON'T have to reactivate as long as I don't format my Hard Drive first, because the activation info is hidden on my hard drive,so if I don't format the info will still be there. Is this correct?

I just upgraded 2 computers (changed motherboards) on one I reformatted the HD and on the other I Left it as is... I had to re-activate both. It only took about a minute or 2 by phone, it was easily done.

also on the system that I never reformatted the HD on I ran into all kinds of problems and ended up formatting it and nolonger have any problems. I guess it is to much of a change for XP when it comes to changing motherboards.

    Good Luck

    Hi Bluenose,

I think that you will still have to re-activate, because it is tied to a list of 10 components in your machine, and if you change, I think it's four of them, it will assume that you have installed it on a new machine and trigger the re-activation process.
It really is not anything to worry about though, just a couple of minutes on the telephone.
