Have a HP Pavilion operating Windows XP Home Edition. System crashed last week and I had to run the HP recovery program. After a week of effort I have all my critical applications working EXCEPT NETSCAPE 7.1. It Does not start.

I have re-installed several times. Found this site yesterday and copied profile to root directory. Since morning I have tried the following:
    1) "clean install ". Did not work.
    2) Deleted XUL.MFL; Chrome folder; could not find compreg.dat.
    3) Ran regedit.exe. Both Mozilla and Netscape were listed. After selecting Mozilla.org display showed-Default, REG_5Z, Value not set. I could not determine how to add another line "Everyone ". Same problem when I selected Mozilla.

When I went into Windows Explorer I saw Netscape 6 and 7. I
Questions: 1) How do I add the line Everyone in the registry
    2) Any other suggestions.
    3) Why is Netscape 6 still on the drive after I deleted ALL Netscape folders yesterday before trying the "clean install "?

    Welcome to the Forum, Basilcope!

    Hi Bas,

Cheer up, we'll get you up and running in no time. I don't think the Registry edit will be necessary, if you follow this guideline:

    First:
Uninstall Netscape 7.1 thru Windows Add/Remove (I heard that groan!)

    Next:
Delete these two folders in Programs Files: Netscape, and mozilla.org
    C:\Program Files\Netscape
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org

This will remove the GRE folder which most likely is the culprit!

Remove the Mozilla folder located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla
Back it up for good measure as it contains your Profile

Next: REBOOT THE PC Your system files will be updated.

Now you are ready to install Netscape again, however, this is assuming that you have a backup of your entire Profiles directory. Do you? If so, then follow this procedure:

    Install Netscape

    The following steps are important:
Don't let Netscape launch, once it is installed, and don't create a new profile. Close any window that opens at this point. This is so no Profiles Folder is created. You will copy the entire Profiles folder from your backup.

    Next:
Copy the backup of the Profiles Folder and paste it into the Mozilla folder of the new install:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla

That should get Netscape up and running.

    Ramona

P.S. Where on the HD did you find Netscape 6 ?

Thanks a lot. Netscape is now working. If I had found this site a week ago I would have saved 25-30 hours of "trying everything" I could think of and searching the Microsoft and HP sites.

UNFORTUNATELY, after I sent my message I found another of Ramona's suggestions, on another thread, to delete Mozilla.org as a part of the preparation for a re-install. That solved the problem. But, I created a new profile because at the end of the install process a window opened that required that a new profile be set-up. Does it make a major difference? I have old back-up copies of profiles, plug-in and setup on the C drive so I can do another "clean install" if necessary.

This new install found and copied my list of allowed "popup" sites but my bookmarks and mail features were not found.

NEXT QUESTION. I have the previous versions of Netscape on a different hard drive (drive H). How can I get them into the new install?

I believe that I found Netscape 6 under Mozilla.org (not 100 percent certain)

    Thanks again.

PS for other inexperienced users, if you cannot find the files\folders in the suggested paths such as C:\Program Files\Common files.....etc, use Windows advanced search feature and look into hidden files. That was how I found profiles and Mozilla.

CORRECTION. I found Netscape 6 after running the Registry Editor- Regedit.
When I opened Netscape 6 there is a sub-folder Netscape 7.1b1(en). There is another folder with the identical name Netscape 7.1b1 on the same level as Netscape 6. Both are in the Netscape folder.

    Bas,

Close Netscape and Quick Launch, then open Windows Explorer:

Copy the bookmarks.html file from the backup to the new *.slt folder. For your Mail files, assuming that you have set up your Mail Account, copy the backup Mail files with NO msf extension. If you have no Mail in your new Profile, answer Yes, when Windows prompts to overwrite the existing files. Those files would be Inbox, Drafts, Templates, Sent, etc. Also copy any SBD folders to the new Mail Account folder, as they contain the subfolder of the Mail Account.

Are you asking how to get the Profile Data into the new Profile?

Let us know if you have further questions.

Netscape still does not work properly. I do not have many of the paths, files and folders that are referred to in these threads. For example I do not have:
    1) C:\windows\Appplication Data....
    2) C:\Documents and Settings\user_name....
    3) I cannot find a folder named *.slt.
    4) Moxilla and Mozilla.org can be found only by running the Register Editor (regedit.exe).

Cannot set-up mail account or export the address book to netscape. Get error message "cannot connect to server" "mailbox creation failed "

I have tried the "clean install" several times. I have now un-installed and deleted all programs, files and folders relating to Netscape and Mozilla from my C drive. I have Netscaspe 6.1 on another hard drive. I will probably try to reactivate 6.1 or just use Internet Explorer with all it's security issues.

Could there there be a problem with the installation of XP Home on my computer?

When using Windows XP the above are hidden files and to view the files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

I don't know much about Windows XP, but I believe that you must have Administrator privileges in order to set up certain components. I hope that other XP users will jump in here and help.

Whether or not there is a problem with your XP install is beyond my expertise. Take a look here: http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/setup02.html
which is what I'm going to do, and see if there is anything there which might help.

If you use Internet Explorer you must disable JavaScript, due to the Download.Ject Virus, reported by Microsoft, who recommends using Opera or Mozilla. See this MS Security Article: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/download_ject.mspx

You too, might want to consider Mozilla 1.7, which is a much more stable browser than Netscape 7.1. It has none of the Netscape 7.1 bugs, which you have encountered, such as the GRE install bug. Think about it.

Took a 10 hour break to clear my mind. I found Mozilla on other paths and much deeper in sub-folders than is illustrated in the threads on this site.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.****\Application Data\Mozilla......
    C:\Windows\System32\Config\System Profile\Application Data\Mozilla.....

Still have not made any progress connecting to the server to setup the mail account and\or importing my address book.

    Hi Bas,

You can't export Netscape 6 Address Book as an LDIF file. Use Dawn, the Address Book Exporter instead.

Your Windows XP shouldn't interfere with your Mail setup. Are you positive that you have used the correct settings?

Significant Progress. After uninstalling Netscape and deleting the Netscape, Mozilla and Mozilla.org folders I used Windows and did "advanced searches" in systems and hidden folders and files. There were an additional 67 folders and files that had Netscape in their names-including several Netscape 7.1 folders in archive. That was a time-consuming and painful reminder that uninstall and delete do not remove programs and files from the system.

I opened each file and DELETED ALL those that were not subfolders of other applications.

I then did my 14th "clean install ". The mail account was set-up and Navigator has been OK all afternoon.

Since I had deleted every Netscape 7.1 file as a part of this exercise, I mayl have to manually replace bookmarks and my address-book. I imported my Yahoo address-book but it is too cumbersome to use because Netscape
did not merge it into the standard address book.

I have most of the addresses in my Netscape 6.2 address-book that is on another hard drive. When I am confident that Netscape 7.1 is settled and functioning properly, I shall try and merge the two address books.

I hope that my experience will make easier for others to resolve installation problems. Time elapsed so far-over 50 hours.

    Netscape 7.1 will not load

    Ariel2black

    Ramona,

I just want you to know that I found this site and followed your advise. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!

It appears to have been the "hidden" GRE file which remained after numerous loadings and removals of the program.

    Thanks!!!!!!
