I have a new HP laptop with a ALPS touchpad mouse. It worked fine when I just got it. I picked up a plug in mouse (Targus) and it worked OK too. Now I find that I cannot adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad. When I go to mouse properties I see just the adjustments for the add-on mouse. I'm also having lots of problems with the Targus mouse now (can't highlight, capture) for cut/paste. I end up using a combination of the two mice just to get by.

Seems strange I can't get the menu to adjust sensitivity of touch pad mouse.

I am reluctant to download anything new (drivers, etc) without knowing a little more. I can't afford to be without the computer if it would really crash.

    Can someone please comment?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Did you install any software or drivers that came with that mouse? If yes, uninstall them & reboot.

No, there was nothing to install. Just plug and play in the UBS port. I've gone to the ALPS site and see references for drivers, but I didn't want to take a chance that it might make things worse.

I was hoping others might have an experience that might shed some light on this. If it seems safe to 'uninstall' the driver on the computer and try to re-install from the web site, I suppose I can try it.

If your alps device is/was working fine before the USB mouse was added, I wouldn't advise removing the alps drivers. Not sure what to tell you at this point because it would be guessing and that helps no one. Hopefully, someone else has some ideas. Have you looked at the settings on the alps device to determine if it can be changed/disabled automatically when a mouse is detected?

You could try booting into Safe Mode and see what works/dosen't work there (you will have to open programs through the start menu, there won't be anything in the system tray or quick-start). If you post back your findings it may help to find a cause (although I myself, have little experience with laptops).

It sounds like a clash of drivers and I would doubt that it will rectify itself. Backup your data now in case the worst happens. Then you are free to try new drivers or format and reinstall Windows if needs be (collect the CDs that were supplied when you got the machine). Your harddrive could fail tomorrow, so you would be in a worse position...don't neglect your backups.

Regarding the settings on the built-in mouse pad (ALPS), the problem is I do not get a screen for the pad when I go to mouse settings in the control panel ... it still shows the diagram of the hand held add-on mouse. I guess that's the reason I'm unable to adjust sensitivity (maybe I didn't explain this well before).

So, clarifying this ... when I unplug the add on mouse from the UBS, shut down the computer and re-start, I continue to see the settings screen for the hand hand mouse and not the mouse pad.

Anyone with any other comments ??

That helps ........ go to the HP website and download and re-install your alps drivers. Your operating system installed drivers for that mouse and thinks its still there. Once installed, you should have an option in your alps settings to automatically recognize an external mouse and permit it to co-exists peacefully. Mattman is dead on, driver problem compounded by device recognition. Another perhaps more simple approach would be to boot to safe mode, remove the mouse in the control panel and reboot.

Thanks for all the in put. I got it fixed. You were right - the ALPS BIOS was corrupted. (I ended up using an on-line help technician w/ HP.) When I uninstalled the driver for the ALPS and re-booted, it automatically re-installed itself and it solved the problem.

    Thanks again! :) :) :)
