    Hello

I am trying to free space on my harddrive and discovered that under c:\windows\internet logs I had 1600 files amounting to 2.7 Gb. Most files named xDB+some figures.

Oldest files from October 2001 and PC put into operation in May 2000. OS is WIN98 and IE 6.0.

I take it the files may be deleted but is there a way to have the files deleted regularly in the same way as Temporary Internet Files?

And why are the xDB....tmp files created?

In the same file: Internet Logs, I found text files left by ZoneAlarm.

Hope somebody may enlighten me on this issue :)

    Regards

AFIK, not the system. There are several apps that will clean out files: this is one - System Security Suite in which you can designate which folders to clean http://www.igorshpak.net/

They are temp working files for whatever process - IE or another part of the OS is using - and not needed after the process ended. Other than that, I have no better explanation, it's built into the design of the OS and application programs.

ZA's log file. Accessed by the "view log" tab in ZA's panel. Also can be cleaned out periodically. ZA will recreate it.

    Regards - Charles

FWIW, the xDB.tmp files are also put there by Zone Alarm. Should be safe to delete them.

    Thanks to Charles and Zander.

I installed System Security Suite and marked Temporary Files for deletion but the tmp files in Internet Logs were not deleted. Same applies to other tmp files in Microsoft environment.

    Otherwise the SSS worked well.

Does it mean you have to make a userdefined folder for *.tmp files?

By the way what do AFIK and FWIW stand for?

    Regards

AFIK - As far as I know
FWIW - For what it's worth
    ;)

I don't have the app you're trying to use so I can't help you with it right now. I'll have to first take a look at it. Maybe charlesvar can help though.

    Hi Mariola,

The files are in use - shutdown ZA via right clicking tray icon; be sure to restart it.

    Hi Charles

The tmp files will not disappear even when I close ZA.

Same applies to tmp files in:

    c:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word
    and
    c:\windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar
    and
    c:\windows\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\user tile

    Regards

I tried the app and was able to delete the .tmp and.txt files with it without shutting down ZA. I can see a couple of things that might be your problem. When you added the folder in SSS did you put a check-mark in the box next to the folder name? If so, on the items to clear tab did you check the box next to the User Defined Folders line? You have to have both of them checked in order for it to work.

There's another possibility that I can see may be happening. When you add the folder on the user defined folder tab, did you edit the filter? If you just left it as *.* then it might have problems deleting them because the ZALog.txt file is always in use by ZA unless you turn off the logging feature in ZA. If you want to use the logging feature and still use this program to delete the files you can change the filter accordingly. You can't use .txt as the filter because once again it will choke on the ZALog.txt file. So, try changing the filter to look like the following line.

    *.tmp;ZALog2*.txt

Be sure to include the semi colon. It seperates the two files so the program knows that it's two different file types. This is how I did it and it worked perfectly for me. You can view this info in the readme file that comes with the program. ;)

What the folders have in common are that they are System folders and that's probably why.

Go into the foldrers and delete manually - see if that works.

If it does not, than I'm at a loss.

I use another app to get rid of locked system files, but it is not free http://www.east-tec.com/ I think they have a trial period.

    Regards - Charles

Edit: Just read Zander's post - of course, the obvious :)

    Hi Charles and Zander

Thanks a lot. Everything works well following the Zander instructions carefully. ;)

I was of the opinion if I marked the box "Temporary Files" under My computer this would be enough to delete the tmp files but Zander told me otherwise

In the end I got an extra 3 Gb of space.

    Thank you. :)

    Regards

    Hi Charles and Zander

    One follow-up ? on 3S.

When you are using the User Defined Folders, is there a way to keep the paths entered?

The way I see it, the paths are deleted everytime you clear the system.

    Regards

Well, I don't know what's going on there. If you mean you have to add the folder again to the user defined folders list the next time you use the program, you shouldn't have to. On mine, I select the clear selected items button and when it's done, the paths to the special folders are still there. If I close the program and reopen it after cleaning things the paths are still there. I tried to duplicate what you said (if I'm understanding you correctly) and couldn't. On the user defined folder tab, are you by any chance clicking on the delete button at the bottom? If so, that's why they disappear. The delete button is only to delete a folder from the list. It doesn't actually clean anything. Once you set the folder path, you should be able to click the clean selected items button on the items to clear tab and not lose the folder paths you've entered. At least that's the way it works for me.

Like Zander, I'm not clear on what you mean. Once established, you have to delete the folder ( "path" I think that's what you mean).

You an uncheck the folder so it doesn't clear - but re-checking puts it back in operation.

    Hi

I found out the mistake I made :D

After pressing the clear selected items button, a pop-up appears asking you whether you wish to restart your computer which I choose.

If I say no and first close 3S and then restart the normal way, 3S keeps the User defined folders as created.

    Thanks and :)

    Regards
