I'm using an optical wheel mouse with USB port. The problem that annoy me is the mouse can't be use each time I on my notebook until I plug out then plug it in again or search for it inside Device Manager. The frequently(sometimes got no problem) exists problem occur when I started using Windows XP.
I can't figure out what actually causing that. Please help.

Does this happen with all USB devices? If you have a BIOS setting for "USB Legacy Support" try disabling it. As a workaround, you could run a batch file at startup to scan for hardware changes.

I don't think this happened to other USB devices. Btw, is there any solution other than running that batch file since it will somehow slowdown the startup process. Thanks.

USB mouse not recognized under Win 98

I have reinstalled everything in my 2-month-old computer, choosing Windows 98 rather than XP.

I have a Gigabyte 7ZXE board with a VIA KT133A chipset, Athlon 1800+ processor, Genius USB NetMouse Pro.

Under XP, the USB mouse worked fine, without even having to install a driver. So that the mouse is OK.

Under Win 98 the computer refuses to recognize the USB mouse, despite my having installed drivers from the original diskette and from the Genius website. On the other hand, the computer does react to the button on the side of the mouse, but not to the top buttons or the lever.

    A PS/2 mouse works fine.

I downloaded and installed VIA USB Filter Patch version 1.10 and VIA Service Pack 440V.

I downloaded Q133240 - Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager.htm from Microsoft. There are no conflicts. The Mouse entry contains only Microsoft PS/2 mouse, which is what I am using and is the only one that I can get to work. I have two different Genius USB mice, and neither is recognized.

I downloaded Q191772 - USB Devices May Not Be Detected by Windows 98 from Microsoft. The only mouse it refers to is Microsoft IntelliMouse USB version 1.0. Nevertheless, I proceeded as directed: Click the PLUS SIGN ( + ) beside Universal Serial Bus Controller to expand the branch.

If Universal Serial Bus Controller is not listed in Device Manager, USB support may not be enabled in your computer's BIOS. Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on how to enable USB support on your computer.

Under Universal Serial Bus Controller, you should see the following components:

    · PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
    · USB Root Hub

When I checked, I found that I had two of each. If one is good, then two must be even better?! In any event, there is no indication of any problem.

I downloaded Q206002 - USB Keyboard or Mouse Does Not Work in Windows 98 from Microsoft. This looked promising, since it stated the actual message that I would receive when booting up:

Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now.
To attach a mouse to a PS/2 port, you must first turn the computer off.

The first advice that Microsoft gives is to use a PS/2 mouse. How clever can you get. This is sidestepping the problem rather than solving it!

If one is insistent, Microsoft also gives another solution:

Restart your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup Menu .

Click Start , point to Settings and then click Control Panel .

Double-click System , and then click the Device Manager tab.

Double-click the USB controller, click the General tab, click to select the Disable in this hardware profile check box.

Click OK , click Close , and then restart your computer.

Click Start , point to Settings and then click Control Panel .

Double-click System , and then click the Device Manager tab.

Double-click the USB controller, click the General tab, click to clear the Disable in this hardware profile check box.

Click OK , click Close , and then restart your computer.

I did this, too. But to no avail.

The I downloaded Q241134 - USB Mouse or Keyboard Not Working with AMD OHCI USB Controller from Microsoft. It sounds promising. However, it is intended to solve a problem in which one "may experience intermittent instances where Windows does not recognize the USB mouse or USB keyboard." I would be thrilled if the problem were only intermittent.

Next I reinstalled the Genius NetPro USB mouse, using the software that I downloaded from the Genius website. The helpful Readme file describes what files were to be installed in the various directories. I checked and this indeed occurred.

Unfortunately, nothing I've done so far has made it possible to use the Genius NetmousePro/USB mouse in my system.

Is there something that I could have done to remedy this and have not done so?
