Is there a difference between MS-DOS mode and Safe Mode?
If so, what is it?

    Black and White difference.

DOS is an operating system that Win98 is built on top of.

Safemode is the stripped down version of Win98 used for troubleshooting. It turns off the majority of the bells and whistles to assist you in getting into windows.

    Thank you, Steve.

I’m familiar with Safemode, I use it all the time when Scanning for Errors and Defragging.
I wasn’t able to see a "black and white" difference with it and DOS.
I see it on the Start~Shutdown~Re-start in DOS mode.
Is that another way to Scan and Defrag without the "bells and whistles
Or is DOS so basic, it doesn’t even have Scan and Defrag?
Can you tell me under what circumstances it is used?

Thank you for your attention. :)

Hi carval, what Steve was saying is that Safe Mode is a limited colour
form of Windows, with many features restricted.
DOS is a white on black text only input capable screen into which you
    can type DOS commands.
In DOS, you can type scandisk but there is no DOS command to defrag your
    drive/s.
    regards

Merlin, Steve, Thank you for your input.
I now know a little bit more than I knew before.
    Gratefully,
    :)

I think you should be aware that with Win98 there are three ( 3 ) DOS areas available.

One is from the F8 Menu at boot up. That is straight pure DOS. No part of Windows is loaded.

Next is the MSDOS Mode arrived at from the start-shutdown menu ( restart in MS-Dos Mode ). That IS NOT pure DOS. There a are few files from Windows Running. That is why to get out of it properly and safetly it requires EXIT to be typed at the DOS prompt.

This are is usually no problem UNLESS it is being used as a Dual Boot. ( some DOS program using different Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.)

Then there is the MS-DOS Prompt arrived at from Start-Programs- System Tools. This is also not pure DOS. Exit is usually the better way out of this also.

    Steve R Jones
    covered the Safe Mode nicely

    Thank you Billy Bob,

I will try to remember that "EXIT" tip if and when I'm in DOS-Mode.
I appreciate each and every piece of information for using the computer.
    :)
