Recently my niece mistakenly deleted some system files on her PC. I did a repair install of Win98SE in hopes of reinstalling the missing files. The install went fine except the newly installed IE5.0, which comes with the Win98SE CD, acted erratically. I went to the Windows Update website and downloaded IE6.0 and installed it. After the installation IE6.0 acted worst than IE5.0. I then attempted the Explorer Repair and it did not work. There were about 25 DLL files that were no good. The error message said the installed files were not the needed current files meaning these files were from a previous version. Without these updated files IE6.0 will not work.
Is there anyway of somehow doing a "Clean Install" of either IE5 or IE6 in order to acquire the needed files? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Forgot to mention that in my original post. Yes, I downloaded the updates first and rebooted. Went back a second time and downloaded IE6.0 SP1 and rebooted again. All updates were downloaded and installed. IE6 is still no good. Thanks.

When you say you downloaded IE6.0 SP1, does that mean you downloaded it and then installed it or did you install it online ?

If you tried online it may not work properly because certain files are in use and will not be over written.

In oredr to upgrade IE properly it must not be being used/online. I ran into the myself.

When you reinstall IE, do it this way. Open Windows Explorer, and go into the C:\Windows Update Setup Files folder, and double click Ie6setup.Exe. This is the install download file, click on the Advanced button, then in the new little window, select to 'download and install later' then Ok, then start the download\installation. When it has completed downloading, do not install, yet. Go to Start\Run and type in Msconfig and press Enter. Click on Startup tab, and uncheck everything except for Scanregw, Systray, and both PowerProf entries. Now reboot.
Then go back into the C:\Windows Update Setup Files and run Ie6setup.Exe, it should now install.
It should not connect to the internet at this time, and you can keep your own copy of the install files this way.

    Markp62 & BillyBob,

Ran the install offline and the same problem occurred.

Quote: "This is the install download file, click on the Advanced button, then in the new little window, select to 'download and install later' then Ok, then start the download\installation. When it has completed downloading, do not install, yet. "

Never saw the advanced button or the option to install later. Maybe with Windows XP, but not with Windows 98SE. Once the download began all I could do was wait until it finished. After the download completed I rebooted the system and ran the install offline. Still the same number of errors as before. I might have to do a reinstall of Windows. Any suggestions, recommendations, or shortcuts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to all.

    jackpan,
windows 98 se works good, if u dont install lots of software. it is not a bad idea to make a clean install. so all of unwanted files and foolish registry records will be deleted. u will have a fresh and faster win98.

u can try other browsers like mozilla instead of ie6. i use mozilla under linux now. it is good enough for me.

You could try this. Go get IERadicator. This will rip out all traces of Internet Explorer, allowing a good complete install.
BTW, my instructions for the custom install were for 9x, as 2K and XP does not have this available.
I am not sure if you know what ActiveX is. It is for a website to download, install and run programs on your computer, nothing to do with what you see on the webpage. Just about the only really good use for it is at Windows Update. ActiveX is responsible for drive by installs of ad/spyware, homepage and search page hijackers, in short a security risk. If you are seeing the message ActiveX is needed to view this page properly, something was trying to install, perhaps behind your back.

Got good news and bad news. Did a reinstall of Windows. No error messages and install appeared to run normally. Now for the strange stuff. After the install completed I rebooted with the CD removed. When the Windows logo screen appeared it said, "Getting ready to run windows for the first time ". Rebooted the system two more times - same message. Never saw this before once the OS was loaded.

Problem #2. Went to IERadicator. Could not download file. Appeared website was down. Next I went to the Windows Update website to download available updates. No problem. When I went to install Explorer 6.0 I received one error message when installing "Browsing Services ". A dialog box appeared saying,

Error or Exception when calling function DLLINSTALL in C:\Windows\System\INETCPL.CPL.

I am really stuck. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

    ie6setup.exe

Try this command-line install options exactly as typed below (include quotes):

    ie6setup.exe /Q:A /C: "ie6wzd /S:" "#e" " /Q:C /R:N /V:I "

the /V:I does a full reinstall.

Is this statement one solid line or are there required spaces in between certain characters? Thanks.

    ie6setup.exe /Q:A /C: "ie6wzd /S:" "#e" " /Q:C /R:N /V:I "

    jackpan,
I have NO idea what this does but if you run it try it like it's posted.

    I'll assume (ugly) that you'd do Start> Run> (type in) ie6setup.exe /Q:A /C: "ie6wzd /S:" "#e" " /Q:C /R:N /V:I "

Like I said, I have NO idea what this will do

    Simplest way ....

Highlight and copy command line from Count Zero's post -

Start > Run > paste in command line > OK

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. Wanted to try everything you recommendeded first. The bottom line is nothing worked! Had to do a clean installation of Win98SE. The hard drive was in such bad shape I had to reformat the C drive first before the reinstall. Never saw a problem this bad before.

In any event I want to thank all for your time and patience. Appreciate your assistance. This thread can now be closed.
