I am having problems with Outlook Express 5, I am getting error messages, that tell me that my password is being rejected and it cannot connect to port 110.

"There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'pop. Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Invalid login/password pair', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92 ". I am also getting additional error messages " No Socket Error 11001" and "Error Number 0x800CCC0D "

When I start OE I get the little symbol coming up in the system tray, this has a red cross through it, and that is before I get the error messages. I also get the small box with a padlock on it asking for my account name and password and for me to connect, when this has failed I get a box with the error message.

I have recently installed McAfee Internet Security Suite Ver 6, but due to some problems, I had to delete this and all references to McAfee from the registry etc as I originally had McAfee virus scanner ver 5 on my system.

I reinstalled Security Suite 6, and left out "SpamKiller" and "Shredder" but I am still not able to download mail from my server.

The computer crashed a few weeks ago due to a conflict between McAfee Virus Scanner ver 4 and Zone Alarm ver 5, so I restored my system via Drive Image. Is it possible that the Idenity folders have become corrupt when the computer crashed or when I restored my system.

After I restored my system I installed IE ver 5.5 but left the Mailer as OE 5, I installed IE 5.5 over IE 5. I did try to delete OE5 and I re-installed it but the problem was still there. I did not delete anything from the registry.

I did have Mailwasher pro 4 installed and I was able to access my account via that method, but there was no point in having it as the mail could not download to my machine.

I have contacted my ISP and my account is ok, I can telnet into my acount using port 110 , use www.mail2web.com to gain access to my mail. My ISP is Wanadoo in the UK (previously Freeserve). I wonder if this could be a problem.

I have had a look on the boards and found some references to this problem. I have been through the routine of checking my settings and they are ok, I have even changed my password all to no avail. I have deleted the account in settings, rebooted, and put the settings in the correct boxes and nothing. According to Microsoft I have to re-install my Firewall. While others say that I should do a complete re-install of McAfee, but not installing Privacy.

I have checked my settings on the fire wall and they are ok, permission has been granted for OE5 to go on the net, As I said I have deleted and re-installed Security Suite without SpamKiller.

I have noticed in Privacy on McAfee in Administrator Security settings, there is a section for programs accessing the net, IE is there but not OE ? even though permission has been set for it to access the net.
"Programmes To add" just brings up a box with the statement "Programs to Block ". I have given permission for OE 5 to access the net through ports 110 and 25.

Having McAfee Privacy on the computer is very strange as it does prevent the user from acessing files, It does not allow me to access the Identity Folders for OE 5 on my C: drive, I get a blue screen and a warning plus three options. It also prevents me from using the defrag programme and scandisk. It uses a logging on system and it will stop the user from going into safety mode.

I have checked the information on the Microsoft site and followed the links and instructions etc all to no avail, the microsft site's Knowledge Base on deleting OE 5 is not there any more. I preseume that there must be some way of deleting everything including the identity folders, as I feel that is where the problem lies.

I am able to access my mail via webmail.

I do not know where I am going wrong, I live without OE for a while, it s just the matter of downloading mail.

I am tempted to try using Eudora and seeing what happens.

In OE, go to Tools\Accounts, select your email account then click on Properties. Then click on Servers tab, uncheck 'Logon using Secure Password Authentication'.

I have tried that with no success. I tried deleting the account and then recreating it and still nothing. I keep seeing the little icon coming up in the system tray when I log onto OE and this has a red cross through it.

Something seems to be preventing me from logging on to the mail server via OE.

That little icon is showing up because you have OE set to Send and Receive mail at startup. There is a problem, thus the red X.
I am not real familiar with MacAffee, but I think it does some sort of proxy for the email, where it scans the email before passing it on to OE. And this could be preventing OE from directly accessing port 110. Sorry, not much help with MacAffee and OE.
Or it could be your identities is not matching up. This may be too complicated for you, but here it is. Go to Start\Run and type in Regedit. Navigate to this key.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{bunchoflettersandnumbers}
With {bunchoflettersandnumbers} highlighted, look to the right, you will be 'User ID' with a bunchoflettersandnumbers to the right of it. What this comes down to is that the {bunchoflettersandnumbers} on the left needs to match {bunchoflettersandnumbers} on the right.

I have been into the registry all the letters etc all match up.

As I am on a dial up service i may try to re-connect by taking my dialer off and re-installing it and also re- installing the pay as you go dialer.

Let me make sure I understand you. If are using one ISP to access an email account on another ISP, yes, you are going to have some problems. The ISP with the email account notices that the IP address from another ISP is not theirs, and are blocking it.

My account with my ISP is a special account, it uses another phone number because of a deal with the phone company. Evenings & Weekends in the UK.

The dialer for this account just acesess another phone number. My ISP allows the subscriber to regain acess to his or her account if they have become corrupted or have been lost due to a hard drive crash etc.
What I thought I might do is to try to acess my account by rejoining my ISP but still retaining my email address. I was not going to create another account. My special dialer does not give me an email address.

I had wondered if my address had been corrupted when the pc crashed, but on reflection I was able to access my mail before I installed McAfee Privacy service.

What I may do this is to re-install McAfee and try and run it without the privacy service (which does not keep tracker cookies away from the system) and then try to run it without the firewall and see what happens.

At the moment I dont want to install ZoneAlarm as there is a conflict with McAfee virus scanner, unless they have rectified the situation.

I think i have found the error and the cause.

    http://www.ufaq.fsnet.co.uk/frames/mail_errors.html

On this page there is a reference to dial up accounts lasting 90 days or they expire if they have not been used for that time.

When my pc crashed, I restored my system using a backup that dated from 2001, and there may have been a cookie on there that the mail server rejected.

So later today I will try and rejoin my ISP and I will let you know what happens.

I contacted my ISP and they said the usual thing about deleting the account via OE tools, etc. I have been down that road and have had no sucess, all it does is just recreates the account and we are back at square one with no output via port 110

Am I able to delete the idenity through the registry and then trying to create the account again as though OE had just been installed or used for the first time.

You could try that, but I think it would not do you much good. Before you do, create a backup for yourself. Highlight that Key on the left in Regedit, then go to the toolbar at Registry\Export Registry File, and give it a name you can remember. If something goes wrong, just double click that file, and that entry in the registry will be put back.
I really do think that MacAffee is stopping you somehow. I am not a user of that software so really cannot advise on this. Most AV programs scan outgoing and incoming email. They do this by intercepting the email software's email packets. So instead of OE going directly to port 110, it is redirected to a local address and port, the one that MacAffee uses. Direct outgoing attempts are blocked as something bad, such as a virus using it's own email process.

I have the problem sorted, uninstalled Privacy service and redid my connection to my ISP and It's working, not properly but it'll do. Re-installed Mailwasher, but I am having problems with version pro 4,(free version) It crashes after adding ten or more names to the blacklist, says it has lack of space I have informed Firetrust.

I'll re-install privacy service and I'll configure it properly when I get back from holiday in a weeks time.

Had a problem with some nasty spyware called wupdater, thank goodness for the firewall and adaware removed it.

    Many thanks

Thank you for the update. About this wupdater, if it got far enough to install, and get itself into the startup, this gets me wondering if there is more to it. In short, something else allowed it in, mostly like a BHO [Browser Helper Object] or an ActiveX control [Downloaded Program File]. Both of these items run their code through Internet Explorer, and get past the firewall in this way.
When you get back, post a HijackThis log in the Security section, it will show any additional items. The link for this is at the Quicklinks page, this link is below.
    Have a good time!
