I am attempting to Direct Cable Connect my old Win95 with my new XP Pro in order to transfer old files.
I get the Error771 from XP when attempting to connect, the 25pin Paralell cable being in position.
Need some guidance on WHERE I should be using the same name for the old pc at either end, and how to convince XP that the system is not in fact busy.
    Thanks.

Is Error711 the full error mesage?
If it is a RAS error then the following from Microsoft may help?

Regular parallel cable? The kind that will run a printer? If so, it won't work for this. You need a null modem (crossover) wired cable. That is true for serial, parallel, or UTP (ethernet) cables. Transmit pin wire at one end has to go to the receive pin at the other end.

    The text on Error 771

The 771 message is Connection attempt failed becuse the network is busy. the Help button says "Try agan later" So much for their technical advice!
However, and I believe this sequence is correct, but the screens change so darn fast you can't know, when, on the 95 unit, I start the DIrect Cable Connect accessory and it says it is "Listening ", I note that I get an Error 691 on the XP saying Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain. OK. Makes sense. I have been looking around on the 95 machine to find where specifically I put those data so XP can find it. Perhaps it is "lining up" those identites that is the ultimate problem, since 667 implies I got past 771. This is interesting. In the office, it would be hell, but at home it's "interesting "! Thanks.

    http://www.nullmodem.com/NullModem.htm

Might be easier to purchase Laplink software that comes with the cable. Be sure to check the system requirements on the version before you buy it. Not all work with W95.

That could certainly account for 95 not being able to connect to XP. Simple fix for that you could try.
    - log on to the 9x machine with a username and non-blank password. Does not matter in this instance what you use as long as the logon includes both.
    - ensure the Guest account is enabled on XP. It will be by default on XP-home and will not be by defaut on XP-pro. Having the Guest account enabled tells XP that any logon is fine as long as it includes name & password.

    Domain question

I got a brand new Direct Connect Cable just to be sure it was not a hardware problem. I need to understand two things (at least) 1. Why is XP telling me in Error 691 that the username and password are "invalid on the domain" What domain? THis is a direct connect and the XP wizard was told so. 2. There are a number of locations in WIn95 where I seem to see Passwords, such as the Password Properties dialog in the Control Panel, the SSharing context menu for the System icon in the Control panel, along with a "Share Name" i have as OLDPC and Access type as Full and I filled out a Full Access Pasword on that screen just in case that was where XP was looking. I need to know where I have to set the parameters on the95 machine that the XP machine doesn't give me that message. It's just one lousy cable. Thanks.
I just noticed this in the XP Direct Connect help referencd: *A direct network connection that uses a DirectParallel cable requires a stand-alone computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.* So I cannot connect to a 95 machine from XP?
