    I am running XP Home Edition... I have run AVG, Trojan Guarder and gone to MicroTrend Housecall...
    AVG says I have no viruses, Trojan Guarder says I have no trojans, MicroTrend says I "m clean too..
    Yet, when I try to install a screensaver, AVG says I have Downloader.Comet.D
    Please tell me how this can be???

    Maybe the screensaver has the infection and AVG picks it up when it's being unpacked?

    Do not install that 'free' screensaver. It has bundled ad/spyware software with it, read the EULA, the part where you click on 'I accept', it should tell you about this.
    Ask yourself this, why does a downloaded screensaver need to connect to the internet while installing? It is because of Downloader.Comet.D, to download other sofware, and ads, bogging down your system in the process.
    If you want a 'no strings' free screensaver for XP;
