install shell.dll problem

My Uncle asked me to look at his computer because he couldnt access his email. When I had rectified his problem I found he had numerous viruses being found by his virus program called Bulldog. He also had Norton antivirus 2003 installed which didnt appear to be working. I installed adaware and spybot which found over 1000 instances of spyware. I then uninstalled Bulldog and Norton and installed Zone alarm. I then tried to install AVG antivirus and got a message that Shell.dll could not be loaded (or similar). Anyone know why this is? Should I try restarting in safe mode and installing?

 

Wow! Amazing that computer even booted, huh? Try doing an SFC with the XP cd in safe mode. If there are corrupted system files, that should fix 'em. You may need to give your uncke a basic tutorial in internet security, and I would definitely use the Immunize feature on Spybot. Post back and let us know if your install worked.

Ick. I just ran into this one the other day. What a major pain!

Try this:

Go into System32\dllcache

Find shell.dll

Right click on shell.dll and choose copy from the menu.

Go back into the System32 Folder and right click on an empty space in the folder. Choose paste fom the menu. This will replace the missing shell.dll
for you.
