    Hi,

I upgraded my Motherboard and CPU to a P4 3gig on an ASUS P4P800se (800fsb). I reinstalled XP Pro and patched to SP1.
However, since installing my pioneer DVD drive will only read certain DVDs, even if I change IDE from DMA to PIO only. I also have a similar problem with my LG CD-RW. I don't have CDs with drivers for these and on last XP install the Windows drivers were OK.

I also notice that my 3dMark03 score shows that my CPU results are far below what they should be, in fact comparing results I get less score than 2.6 gig CPUs. I have Hyperthreading enabled and the FSB is running at 800.

I get advised to install the motherboard drivers (from the Futuremark forums)or the chipset drivers, but these are not on the CD I got, only specific device drivers are there. No luck at the ASUS website either.

Should I have to install "motherboard drivers" when using XP?

Maybe not with an Intel Chipset - M$ and Intel work hand in hand, but with a VIA chipped mobo (AMD CPU) it is a different matter :) However it is more than likely that your copy of XP predates your mobo so the final answer is almost certainly - 'Yes'.
Try Intel. Your mobo handbook will tell you which chipset you are running.
Which ones - post a list and we may be able to help.

Thanks for the Link PeteC, I have already checked that page and all I can find are audio, LAN and RAID drivers for this Motherboard there. I don't use onboard LAN or SOUND and I don't use RAID.

I am starting to feel like a bit of a PC noob now as I really am confused by this Motherboard driver issue. Are the Motherboard or chipset drivers device specific - i.e LAN, Sound etc?

Or is there a driver specifically for the "motherboard/Chipset "

I have flashed to the latest BIOS.

The performance is low compared to other CPUs, yet it IS running at 3300...800fsb :(

As far as I can see you need to download the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. Download from that page I posted, 3rd one up from the bottom ....

    http://www.asus.com/support/downloa...l3_id=19&m_id=3&f_name=inf5021003.zip~zaqwedc

I've downloaded this and the exe file is flagged in Explorer 'Provides Intel Chipset Support for Windows Operating Systems' and the mht file shows support for your chipset.

I must add a disclaimer here - AT YOUR OWN RISK I have no recent experience of Intel chipsets being an AMD man :D

If you are not intending to use the onboard LAN or sound or Raid I would tend to disable them either on the mobo or through Device Manager. The drivers will not then be required.
Chipset drivers for the chipset - specific to the installed chipset. LAN, sound drivers specific to the onboard chips supporting these.

Thanks again PeteC. I have installed that softeware several times, from the CD and from that download. Towards the end (90%) of the install I always hear the Windows sound for a USB being unplugged. The install then says its completed and I should reboot. When I go to the Intel folder this creates and all that is there is a read me though??

I have disbled LAN and sound. I have tried Hyperthreading on and off and the CPU still gets low scores.

The DVD does not read some DVDs now either.

Thanks for the help, but I think that this is just a poor board. I am very diappointed in ASUS, I have always used AMD before and used cheapo ECS Boards, but they have always been better than this :(

I would not necessarily expect to see more than you do in the Intel folder - drivers as such do not appear in WE as they are installed into the core of Windows - but you should find something in System32\drivers referring to Intel. My Nvidia chipset drivers appear there.

Another clue may be found in Device Manager - look at IDE controllers for e.g. - mine shows NVIDIA Nforce ... IDE controller.

Be more specific What brand, what speed, what size sticks, and what slots the sticks are in.

I think this is the problem. 800 Mhz FSB has to have matched sets. since you have 768 of ram you certainly dont have a matched pair of Chips.

Both the sticks are 266mhz, so they are rather slow for the board. They are in slots 1 and 3 (which is where they should be, the blue slots).

According to the manual I only need matching memory modules if I want Dual Channal operation.

If this is the reason that I am getting slow CPU performance I will upgrade to 2 Corsair modules.

Here is a link to my board specs:

Thanks ssmith10pn, I might try getting more memory - just so pricey :(

2x corsair 512 should do. BTW do you know what SD and SS mean on that list?

And as said before, get a matched pair - As far as the Corsiar XMS goes, I'd tell you go with the Ultra low latency (5-2-3-2) - haven't run the 3500, but big difference if you go with the 3200. Prefer the platinum heat sink models to the XMS pro stuff with the LEDs - although rated the same, they don't perform the same. Also been very pleased with OCZ matched pairs of 3200 low latency.

If you are on a budget, Samsung isn't going to look fancy but they are tough to beat for the money as long as you get two of the same.

    ;)

Thanks Rockster. Just looking at the Corsair memory on ebuyer, but a lot of reviewers say its no good for overclocking. I will have my CPU overclocked at least 10% and I think this effects the memory too, so I might look at Kingston memory or indeed Samsung as you suggested.

Read some extremely good reviews about that HyperX dual 3200 but haven't tried it yet. Any of the three - XMS LL Twin (5-2-2-2-1T), OCZ Enhanced Latency dual (5-3-2-2-1T) or the referenced HyperX is very Overclockable.

    ;)

The Hyper X was very hard to get for a while but it seems to be getting better.

I didn't look at the numbers on the 3500 might want to check into that.
