And what a collection! Each time I reformat a machine in our office, I reinstall Win2kPro from the CD's we bought about 2002. Going to Windows Update, there are over 30 Critical Updates to add, and some require rebooting inbetween, etc. So it takes hours.
Microsoft has combined a certain amount of this in the "W2KSP4_EN.EXE" file which they conveniently offer for download, and I keep this on a CD for easy reference.
Question: Is there any more recent combination of Critical Updates in a single maintenance file like this? It would make my job easier each time I rebuild a machine!

Not sure if this is any more helpful than going to the Windows Update site, but I believe you can download and burn to CD without installing until you want

Also MS offers a free Security CD. The only catch is that it is only uptodate as of late October 2003--just slightly more recent than W2KSP4_EN.EXE. There have been several susequent Critical Updates in November, February April, July, etc. which you would have to get otherwise.

OK, I have ordered the CD from Microsoft. We will see what it contains. Thanks Jim. ;)

I'm late to the table! You can download the updates and make a batch file to install them without rebooting until the end. Make sure you apply them in order, oldest to newest!

Read this stuff here about command line deployment:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=824687

Note: the command line options change in the newer packs. Execute a hotfix with a /? on a testbox!

Go here to filter and download the hotfixes:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/CurrentDL.aspx

Be sure to install the OS and deploy patches with the machine(s) unplugged from the LAN. It only takes an instant for an infected machine to compromise a PC once it's found it.

    I hope this helps.

Hi Modemjunki, Thanks for this idea. It sounds like a timesaver. I just received the CD from Microsoft but it looks pretty worthless, for someone who has been getting online updates several times a week. So I will try your idea! Tnx, GG
