Well, i pulled the drive out of the W2K machine and scanned it for viruses, adware/spyware, physical errors, then reinstalled it into the machine.

I cannot get the desktop to load. I can use ctrl-alt-del and get to the task manager, and cmd prompt, but nothing else seems to work.

    Any suggestions?

I'm curious  Why did you pull the drive?

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

    pulled drive

Well, the drive wouldn't boot normally or in safe mode, or run chkdsk, and it appeared that there may have been viruses and adware that was interfering with the proper operation, so i pulled it to check it in a different machine.

Any suggestions as to how i can get the desktop to load?

Did you find anything when you scanned it?

Is it booting a bit better now?

Have you looked into running repair on it?

I've had very good success running the repair from W2K CD, even with the old blue screen of death. You can try that or wait for someone else who has the fix.

    I did find

.....some viruses and spyware, which I cleaned off the drive.

    I then reinstalled it.

However, the same thing is happening. I power up, it begins the boot cycle, accepts the password, then everything except the cursor disappears. I can access ctrl-alt-del functions and so forth, but the desktop doesn't load, the start menu doesn't load....nothing loads.

    Any suggestions?

    Peter,
Do you have the W2K CD?
Have you tried booting in safe mode after putting the drive back in?

    Yes...I have tried safe mode

...and just about every different configuration of safe mode.

Is there a way in W2K to see the boot file?

You can use the link bellow to download boot disk (4 for W2K). I think you'll need to try and Repair the OS. NOT install but Repair. It very well maybe the virus' it had, corrupted things. You could also try with Fdisk:
    FDISK /MBR
    FDISK /MBR
    FDISK /MBR

You do FDISK /MBR 3 times. Doesn't look like it's doing anything but it does.

    Through some miracle...

.....I was able to connect with Win Update and get some of the service packs which were available, and that seemed to clear up the problem.

    Thanks for the help though.....

    Hi Peter,

I got the same problem. How did you resolved yours? What are the service packs that helped you out?
