At work a couple of days ago we were told to do the Windows Update and apply all of the critical updates. There were 3 that appeared,
    Security Update, March 7, 2002
Security Update, February 14, 2002 (Internet Explorer 6)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)
which I installed; I did the same for my home system (Win98 SE); because my son occasionally uses IE, I use Netscape 7.1.
Here's the strange part; after the update and a reboot, I started Netscape and tried to open a bookmarked page that I had recently visited and the page displays only as PLAIN/TEXT. I backed up to the sites home page and it displays fine; I selected the page I wanted and again only PLAIN/TEXT displays. I opened IE (6.0.2800.1106IC) and typed in the URL and Viola! it displays perfectly.
The page type is: .SHTML Can this be 'fixed'?
I also noticed in Control Panel that I have 3 Java plugin controls; shouldn't there be only 1, the most current?

    Fornie,

Welcome to the board! Can you post the link that you are having problems with? I am running Netscape 7 and 7.1 and will try the link. Also, I have only one listing for Java in my Control Panel- version 1.4.0_01. I would not think that having three listed would make a difference, but maybe somebody else can answer that question.

    Welcome to the Forum, Fornie!

    Hi Fornie,

I have the same results as you describe when clicking on the second link you provided, and on any link in the left panel. I also clicked on the contact link with the same results. The JavaScript which they use is IE proprietary, as the second link does work in IE, as you discovered. There isn't anything you can do about this, as it is a server side problem, and has nothing to do with the Windows Security Updates.

You should uninstall all but the current version of Java. Look in C:\Program Files\Java. How many versions do you see there?

    Fornie,

Same results as you and Ramona, sorry. I have to IE occasionally with certain sites. I hate to, but I guess there isn't much of a choice right now.

Whew! That's a relief; I thought the updates had really hosed my system,
the site must have changed something since my first visit, about a week ago
when I bookmarked it, it was fine then. Like Mike I will have to resort to
    IE when these sites appear.

    In C:\Program Files\Java, I see 3 versions:
    j2re1.4.0_01
    j2re1.4.0_03
    j2re1.4.1_02

    fornie,

Are all three Versions of Java listed in Add/Remove ? If so, then uninstall all but the most current Version.

The first one; j2re1.4.0_03; removed perfectly.
the second one; j2re1.4.0_01; seemed to go OK, but the item
is still listed in the Control Panel and the directory still exists,
if I click on the icon in Control Panel it says it can't find it's
registry entry. When I try to remove it goes through the list
"like" it's removing, but it stays put.
I did do a SPYWARE and Virus Check, both before & after,
    just to be sure.

    Fornie,

Did you reboot after each uninstall, so Windows could update the system files? If not then do so and see if the 1.4.0_01 is still listed.

Did you also manually remove the Program folders for these two versions?

Also, if you read this thread: SunJava Security Hole - Versions 1.4.1 thru 1.4.2_04, then you know that you should upgrade to Version 1.4.2_05.

No, the first uninstall removed the Program Folder.
I will try the second one again after a reboot.

    - Fornie -

Tried uninstalling then reboot, the directory still exists and
the icon remains in Control panel. I checked file & folder properties
to make sure they weren't hidden, system or read only.
I will wait to install the upgrade

Before I install Version 1.4.2_05, should I manually remove the folder
    for 1.4.0_01 ?

    Hi Fornie,

If you have removed 1.4.0_01 using Add/Remove, and it is no longer listed in the Program Files List, in Add/Remove, then go ahead and remove the Program Folder.
