Start - Search freeze

Forgive me if I've missed the one I need---but---When I click the above, the Start button stays depressed and the screen freezes requiring a complete restart. I've tried everything suggested but no luck. XP in all other regards is and has been operating well.

 

Everything suggested where, by whom, and could you give specifics. I did find This thread you posted here nearly a year ago with no responses and for that, I apologize. But nothing since then so I'm not really sure what to recommend that wouldn't duplicate things you've already tried.

Generally for this sort of strange behavior I'd have you try

start~run~sfc /scannow

and if the system file check didn't locate and fix the problem to as you to look in your event viewer at around the time you had a problem for errors or warnings that looked related and post any here that didn't make sense to you. start~run~eventvwr.msc
