I removed the MS JVM with Microsoft's tool.
Then I used a different Microsoft tool to make sure it was gone.

Then I downloaded and installed Sun's most recent JVM.

When I go to Sun's Java test page:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp

a Microsoft message appears telling me I must download the Microsoft JVM.

If I push Cancel, nothing happens. The box on the test page remains empty except for the famous red-x-in-a-box.

If I push Download, a Microsoft page opens telling me the Microsoft JVM is no longer available.
However, Java starts to work, and I can see the (ugly) animated figure on the Sun page.

I have tried all 3 recommendations for things to check listed by Sun with no change in the problem. Everything is in place and check marks in the right boxes, including in IE 6.

    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Philidor - Welcome to the Board :)

I have the feeling that MS withdrew the VM removal tool some time ago - problems, maybe.

Sounds like you may have a remnant left somewhere.

Suggest you read this and go through the motions of removing VM according to this article and then reinstall Sun.

    Worked

I followed the instructions on removing MS JVM. Not much to find; just a couple of files in the i386 folder. Afterwards, same problem on the Sun test page, except that pushing Download no longer worked.

But after I uninstalled and reinstalled Sun's Java, seemed to work well, at least so far. I'd originally installed manually. Some kind of download problem. This time the automatic worked, I'm not getting the Microsoft message, and Java worked.
For reference, maybe a bad install. Or, as you said, maybe a residue left by the uninstall MS JVM tool.

    Thanks for your help!
