Hehehe ..... I think you already know the answer to your own question.

Something is (threaded fastener)y with that machine. Have you installed MB aka: chipset drivers? What devices are using that 2F8 memory address? Don't know what you've got for PCI slots in there but you might want to uninstall that NIC and then move it to another slot and re-install it. (just a suspicion - no firm evidence).

Congratulations on what you've accomplished so far.

    ;)

I moved the card already. Still get that conflict. All my cds are copies of the original MS OS disks. I have the originals stored away but my wife is so good at putting things away I can't locate them. I've been doing alot of work on XP machines lately that I didn't think I would need the 95 98 or especially ME disks anymore. I'm glad I found my backup OS disks for these OSs. The MS Security Update CD is the one I got from MS. I hope I can find out where she put them they might be collectors items some day. Thanks for all your help so far. The problem with the drives was I putting the cd in the wrong drive so on a hunch I inserted the cd in the CD-R/RW instead of the CD-ROM at the E:\ prompt and bingo the OS loaded. I called the owner and asked her what happened. she told me her friend reversed the IDE cables which changed the drive letter assignments, but she never told me. He convinced her it was better that way. I reset the BIOS the set it up again but that was before I started over, Fdisked again, reinstalled all the cards, and most of all found out the IDEs were reversed. So far it's running great. Now to convince her to get a new machine or at least let me install 98 again. She says she loves ME so what can you do.

    Understood.

You may get some relief by playing around with DMA settings or seeing if you can manually change that NIC card to a higher memory address. Have you run through all memory addresses to see what is using what?

Don't you just love fixing what some ill-advised "friend who knows a lot about computers" has done.

As an aside, I have one disc that contains 3.1,95a,95b,95c,98,98se,SP1298beta along with a bunch of patches and utilities - used to use it a lot - hardly touch it any more.

    ;)

Solved the 2F8 issue. Went into the BIOS and set it to Auto. Cleared it right up. So everything I wanted to accomplish with this machine has been accomplished. Thanks for sticking with me and thank you for all your help and everyone else who responded to help. It's greatly appreciated.

Call me dumb - in retrospect, and it just came to me - isn't that a common serial port address? I'll look it up later.

Glad you got it. It was fun hearing of your progress. Got to admit, man vs machine is a great challenge and most rewarding when conquered.

It's COM 2 I think it's related to IRQ 3 but don't quote me on it.
