I was playing around with the idea of using Norton Ghost which came with my computer. Going through the initial steps, I noticed that the size of the backup image file would be 8gb. Does this mean that I'm going to have to use 13 cd-r's of 650mb each, or does some compression come into play thereby requiring fewer disks? Thank you.

    Ghost and compression

Ghost offers various levels of compression the more compression the smaller the file but the longer it takes to restore.

try the link below for a good explanation of how to use Ghost

Is your drive partitioned? It's faster to write and restore from hard drives.

I've just gone through the process of making an image of my hard drive onto 13 cd's. All went well, but when it was finishing it stopped at 99% with 90mb remaining to be copied. It then automatically closed, as if the task was completed. Does that sound ok? Not to me :(

    Hello Lugwalker!

It doesn't sound right. You should have a message saying that everything went well.

My burner is not on the list of drives compatible with Ghost and I never tried a direct creation to it (it could work though but is not tested/verified by Symantec) and have this thought in my head right now:

When I create split images to the HDD (I split them to be able to burn to CDs using Nero), when the last span has been created, the first file (the master of the span) is ammended with information on the spans. The first file and the last file always have the same time stamp and the other spans have earlier time stamps.
I suppose a direct burn to CDs handle this in a different way but I don't know how.

Did You do an Integrity Check of the Image?

I suggest that You post a question at Radified Forums. Someone over there may be able to assist.

Thanks, Christer. I tried to do an integrity check, but after the first disk check (and another 12 to go) I couldn't get the second done without things closing down and reverting to Windows. I tried again and again but with the same result. I'll try the forum you suggested. Much obliged. ;)

I see no mention of You doing it from within Windows or from Ghost Boot Disks. If You did it from within Windows, then try the GBDs.
It will take a while to check the integrity of an image spanned over 13 CDs, my maximum was 4 CDs (system partition only, no user data) but it never quit on me doing it the GBD way.
I personally have never done it from within Windows since in an emergency, that option may not be available. I think it's a good idea to learn how to do it from the GBDs and the incentive I mentioned is enough for me.

Well, something is not quite right ...... ...... it seems like it terminates the operation without even producing a complete log. I don't see any error message and there is no time stamp for completion.

When working from GBDs I have forced an error by, during an integrity check, hitting <ctrl+c>. The error log is written to the floppy and it is much more comprehensive.

As I mentioned earlier, I have not done it from within Windows but I assume that the logs should be similar.

Don't give up hope just yet over at RADIFIED, the traffic is not as high there as it is here and someone may eventually come along. You're probably not the first ...... ...... !

Thanks, Christer. It has been suggested that I get myself an extra hard drive instead of bothering myself with 13 cd's. Sounds reasonable.
