    Hey all,

I have 3 machines 2 are XP (home) and one is WIN98SE all share a router for the net, I have lost internet to one XP machine all others work fine. I am thinking it is in the settings for bindings but not sure. In the Connection properties I show,

    Client for Microsoft Networks
    File and print shareing
    QoS Packet Scheduler
    MicroSoft TCP/IP version 6
    Internet protocall TCP/IP

Under advanced settings LAN ( Bindings)

    (File and print shareing)
    Internet protocall TCP/IP
    Microsoft TCP/IP version 6

    (client for Microsoft networks)
    Internet protocall TCP/IP
    Microsoft TCP/IP version 6

I am stummped maybe someone can offer another view...thanks in advance

Did it work yesterday? If so, what changes did you make to the system?

Might try deleting the services and protocols. Reboot. Add them back to in to get the defualts.

    Hi Steve

No, It did not work yesterday it went out the day before unfortunately I had to let it sit for a day before I could start to do anything on it. We want a network set up between 3 pc's 2 XP and 1 WIN98SE machine. needless to say I have had some problems.

As of now the network job is defunked (due to frustration) and everything works as it should on all except the net connection on the one machine. I am assuming it is a binding problem. TCP/IP cannot be removed from win XP.. I found out the hard way by trying, nevertheless I found this while searching for remedys please tell me what you think. I want opinions before actually trying this as I am not sure I understand what the file name has to be or if I can name it whatever I want.

    Regards,

Every experienced network guru knows that quite often the problem with a faulty network connectio is due to the TCP/IP stack being corrupted or not properly bound. Starting with WinXP Microsoft has disabled the ability to uninstall TCP/IP. So what are you to do if you suspect that all that is needed is a clean install of the TCP/IP stack? Luckily it is fairly easy to rebuild the stack to the prsitine conditions that it was in on a clean install using the NetShell utiltiy.

    Here is how:

Go to your command prompt and type the following:

    netsh int ip reset [ log_file_name ]

A log file name must be specified in order to succesfully execute the netsh command. This file will log all the actions taken by netsh.

    Sample:

    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

The only difference between these two is that the first will create the log in the current directory while the second specifies where tho log is to be created. After creating the log you can use notepad or any other text editor to see exactly what changes were made.

Can we just step back to basics a second?

    From the problem computer:

    1. can you ping 216.109.118.70?
    2. can you ping www.yahoo.com?

If yes to one and no to two, the problem is to do with name resolution: check your DNS settings.

If no to both, you have a network problem. Try:

    tracert 216.109.118.70

If you get a network not available or network unknown error, I'd suggest checking your default gateway setting and/or do a "Route Print" and check that the routing table is OK (post it here if you need help with that).

If the tracert gets part of the way out to the internet then stops, the problem is either at the point it stops (the device with the last IP address shown) or at the next step along the line.

    Hello,

I want to thank you all for your input and suggestions, after much investigation, testing and research I have found that the ethernet card has gone bad. I have replaced it and all is working as it should be. I am going to start fresh on my network tonight, also with many suggestions and research I feel confident that I UNDERSTAND the material now :) thanks for all your replys.

    Best Regards,
    FireDancer ;)
