In the past I have always shyed away from using domains and always perfered using workgroups. Now I can see that as I set up larger networks a domain may have some advantages. Having nerver done so can some one point me to a step by step way to set up Users and shares on a new 2003 server on a domain. Would be happy to talk on the phone if that is possable.

Some preliminary information first if you would.

    - How many devices (roughly)
    - How many servers?
    - What server operating systems?
    - All in one physical location?
    - All on the same network/subnet?
    - All intranet or will you be serving up internet content from the same AD domain?

I absolutely agree that for all but the smallest of business netoworks, domain is they way to go.

sorry about the delay in the response, but I don't get on this site to often. I have a small network with about 20 work stations. One File server running windows 2003 on a work group. Will be adding one more sever. this is the one that I was think about setting up as the Domain Server. Yes one location
    and one subnet.

Based on an email that you will be doing network admin and want to move from workgroup to domain, I'd strongly suggest a few $$ invested in some good books.

This is excellent for 2003 server and any others by the same author, William R. Stanek, are a good investment. The Amazon.com link will allow you to search up all the books he currently has available.

There are authors who do books on the subject in greater tech detail but IMO Stanek does a good job of giving you the day-to-day information you will need.

Newt I'm going to try that book and the one for Exchange. They have to be better than the 400.00 M$ books I have that mean nothing when you read them.

Well worth the money - have been for me at least. Not so much if you are trying to add some certs like MSCYGPMM (Microsoft Certified You Gotta Pay Me More) to your credit but very much so if you just want to maintain and tweak network, servers, etc.
