I am using XP Pro and I had Mozilla 1.7 and NS 7.1 installed on my computer. I uninstalled Mozilla 1.7 and installed the new 1.7.1 version. When 1.7.1 started up the tool bar at the top appears to be corrupted. File, edit, view and etc are jumbled on the tool bar and when I click on one of these a black box pops up and nothing happens. Where there use to be an icon for print there is just the word there now. Some one told me to uninstall 1.7.1 and also delete the GRE file which I did. When I reinstalled it I still had the same problem. Then when I tried to start NS 7.1 it wouldn't start so I uninstalled it and reinstalled 7.1 and then I had the same problem with its tool bar and mail and newsgroups would no longer work. I have uninstalled both again but don't know where else to look for what is causing this problem

Did you have separate profiles for NS7.1 and Moz1.7.x. If not not, you can count on that to be the problem. Just think that you are using two, somewhat different, programs, but share the prefs.js file. That's a major no-no.
All this uninstalling goes on a lot, with no consideration of the fact that the profile is driving the program, and not the other way around. And, if would reinstall anything, the same old sick profile would come up, perpetuating the sickness. I can't think of no other reason. Check Ramona's Solutions.
http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/index6.html#7profile You have a number of choices, but, at this time, editing the prefs.js file is not going to help.

I eventually saved my profile and and deleted it and reinstalled NS 7.1 and everything is working fine now.
