I can’t be absolutely certain, but I am pretty sure that right after I upgraded to Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 this problem surfaced. On boot up, a "Windows Installer" appears, attempting to install an already installed 3d CAD program, which I have not touched in months. I cancel it, and it fires up two more times, canceling it each time, before it desists. The system hangs for a while, but afterwards, "Msiexec.exeâ€, the installer module, remains running and it is necessary to purge it. This is somewhat baffling to me "“ anybody have any idea how to resolve this problem? Properties of the msiexec module points to "D:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V" "“ does the "˜/V’ indicate anything signifigant? I did check the registry via the clean option of EasyCleaner but did not see anything specific to the CAD prog; the following entries, pertinent to the system32 folder, did surface, but again not sure that this relates to the problem.

    HKEY_USERS D:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.OCX
    HKEY_USERS D:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.OCX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\System32\MSWINSCK.OCX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\System32\MSWINSCK.OCX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.OCX
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER D:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.OCX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\system32\comdlg32.ocx
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\System32\MSWINSCK.OCX
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER D:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.OCX
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE D:\WINDOWS\system32\comdlg32.ocx

No, I do not particularly want to restore back to get rid of this, as I have done way too much without creating restore points since this started… And, no I have not let the installer go ahead and run "“ maybe I should try that, but it is kind of tricky to install that particular animal, as it is purchased and requires a followup download from the site and some other funky stuff… So, that’s why I just simply want to stop the installer from starting if at all feasible…

Hi keywester, I am sure you have done this already ...
    - what apps run at start-up ? Check with sysedit
    - what apps start from registry entries ( "Run" and vxd sections)
    regards

thanx for reply, but I finally (duh!) let the danged thing go ahead and install, altho it was already installed and quite functional, and that resolved the problem and the prog still functions OK, so case closed (but I will always wonder what in the heck caused that to happen - I've been workin with PC's since the early 80's and never run across that little glitch...)...
