there is this icon for a program i got then deleted without using. i have un-installed it from the harddrive, but the icon for the installer is still stuck to the desktop! whenever i try to delete it, it says something about it being used by another program. i scanned it with norton and ran ad-aware and spybot s&d, so its not a spyware/virus problem. i even booted up in safe mode and tried to delete it and it still claimed it was being used by another program. i checked its properties, and it isnt even 1 byte. anyone know the solution to this?

::EDIT:: im running windows xp pro

Sounds like the Uninstall went Bad

Since the error message says the program is in use, you might need to open the Task Manager (right click in taskbar) and end the offending process. If you still can't delete it,try MoveOnBoot first. Download and install it. It will add a "delete on next boot" option to a right click in Windows Explorer. Open it, expand the Desktop and right click on the offending icon. After you reboot, it should be gone.

Also, get Agent Ransack, which is a wonderful search tool, and look for any files or folders associated with this program. Delete them, too. The other alternative is to reinstall the program, and try uninstalling it, again.

Glad it worked! :D Because there was a "leftover ", I would run a search to see if there are any other remnants of that program. Often, too, icons on the desktop are only shortcuts. Be sure to look in Add/Remove in the Control Panel to make sure that program that made the icon is not still there.
