    Hi all,

Recently, I have a windows 2003 server std and I ran a dcpromo to join the domain controlled by windows 2000.The process was successfuly Hence, this windows 2000 is the FSMO, DNS and all the software required by AD to this domain controller. Now, my windows 2000 crashed due to some hardware problems which forced me no choice but to reinstall windows 2000.
I would like to know how to get this window 2000 back as a domian controller once more., hopefully can get all the users settings to its original state before it crashed.

    Please advice.

    Thanks

If your Windows 2003 server is a domain controller, then your Active Directory is safe. There are several steps that you can do such as a repair install, then restore system state. You could also perform a fresh install and restore system state.
If a system state backup is not available, you will need to remove the computer account from the domain, and remove the DC from the Active Directory sites and services. Then make sure all FSMO roles are on the 2003 DC, and reinstall your 2000 DC, and promote it back to a DC.

Thanks Eric for the reply, I would like to know is it necessary to seize the FSMO on w2003. I would like to have my w2000 to be FSMO back. I've checked my ADUC and saw my w2000 server is under 'Domain controller'. Is it possible to install back my w2000 server with the same name and ip address. Adding to that, run a dcpromo so that it can be a gc , dns server and all the works?

    Thanks
