system COMOS bad

I was using my computer the other day when it shut down. When I tried to restart it, I first got a message to check the time and date, which I did (and reset them) then got a message that said "system COMOS bad" and something about using the default. Because I didn't know what to do, I shut off my computer. I later tried to start it and had no problem. Why did I get this message? Could it be related to my computer being too warm? (I have a laptop and it felt quite warm when this happened) Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Sheila!

More than likely the CMOS battery has failed and will need to be replaced. Check your manual and see if its listed as user servicable. If not you should take it to someone you trust that has the experience with such.

The batteries normally last from 3 to 5 years.

If it's a relatively new machine, it will look like a nice shiney quarter sitting on your motherboard! More likely than not the number will be 2032....
