I hope this gets thru and posted. It took 15 minutes just to load this page.
I use NS 7 most of the time and IE6 once in a while. This machine boots OK
and connects to internet slow. Use Dial-up -have 512 RAM-XP-and have tried all that I know to try for a fix. Get messages "cannot display" Connot be found "
"connection refused" "server cannot be found" "DNS error" and a couple others.
I did a system recovery earlier this week and installed Q832894 from the MS KB.
Also, recently installed Norton Interner Security 2004, which drove me crazy trying to configure. Today I disabled everything in it and disabled it. Still no
difference. I'm grasping at straws: Is it a Winsock problem, bad or corrupted
file, a problem with my ISP, which I doubt ????, could I have a problem with my modem? I was lucky just to get here. When I open IE the home page loads slow. I added 256 of RAM a couple weeks ago, but haven't checked that yet.
Don't know what more I can tell you. Any body have any ideas??
Any help will be appreciated. Joe R.

joeskys--Instead of disabling the various NIS programs, uninstall them. (Keep Norton AntiVirus, if possible). Any help?
I understand you have the problem with either IE or Netscape, correct? Some of the following will only affect IE.
Have you cleaned your cache lately? For IE, IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files.
A corrupted winsock should mean no web access at all--not just slow or sometimes. But you can try the fix. (For XP see at bottom of page.)

There have been several updates for IE since MS04-004. Suggest you go to Windows Update and get them.
And, of course, you could have a virus or spyware (though the messages do not suggest it), so scans (with latest updates) would not hurt.

start~run~eventvwr.msc and look thru the log files for further information.

Thanks for the replys. Hope I can finish this before my ISP drops me.
Newt, I ran the event viewer and used the filters as you told me a couple
weeks ago on the Avery postage stamps discussion. There is a lot of info there that I do not understand how to use it,e.g.. app error-nmain.exe-ntdll.dll---
Is there anything I can download from another PC to a floppy etc. and then put it here for a quick fix. Some errors mention DCOM ?? Are these problems with
XP or my modem or ???. What would be the procedure to reinstall XP if I had to?? I reinstalled Q832894 from the MS KB, I think it helped before but not this time. I tried to run ntsh but was not able to figure out the correct syntax.
Hope I can get back here latter on. Joe R.

Joe - sorry but no way to tell from the information posted.

You might run a hijackthis session and post the log here. Might be some goodies in there.

For any event log items that look horrible but don't make sense, feel free to post copies here. As before, open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows, and paste the clipboard contents to a reply.

    Agree with Welshjim

Disable is absolutely different from unistall.
But you can try use MSCONFIG to disable it first.
    Start->Run->msconfig->ok
    Go services tab
check "Hide all MS services "----Important. Or you may be unable to start!
    Disable others. Restart.

It is a little like safemode. If it works, uninstall Norton will work.

I started this thread on June 27th. Tried all the suggestions you folks gave me,
plus some from other similar threads. As of last Friday I could not even get on
a browser and most of the time I had to try 3,4, or 5 times to get connected to my ISP. I investigated my events viewer as Newt suggested and got one hell-of
a education :). After pinging all over the place and a few other things including
trying another modem, I got a brain storm
:D I connected my other phone line to the modem and guess what?? My Machine performs like new. The phone repair is coming this AM. Any suggestions
to confront him with?? Joe R

joeskys--Thanks for telling us the outcome. Just for the fun of it, you might try using the "bad" line again but being sure all connections are secure (jiggle them). (Also, I presume you did not change the connecting cord in the process of switching to the "good" line.)

Jim: I do not know what you mean by connecting cord.?
The MAN came, checked my outside box, replaced a fuse>no help.
He switched the lines around, outside, like I did inside at the modem.>
no help. To make a long story short> He called the office, requested a different kind of line, in about 3 minutes he was given a bunch of numbers>he went down the road to a switching or terminal box and rewired my line. My PC works
as though it was on cable :) All this could have been done 2 years ago when
I first complained. All in all, even though it was very frustrating at times,
    I got a good education. ;) Joe R

Thanks again to all who gave suggestions.
