Okay.. this is driving me crazy!

I have a machine, its a Pii 400 mmx with 256mb ram... its an asus board, and i know the hardware is working alright. I've tested all of it in another machine... my problem is windows.

When i click the X on a window, or file/close the machine stops responding. (i hit the numblock key and nothing happens), the mouse stops working, everything appears to lock up. I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and the "close program" box comes up, then, some times it'll give me control of the computer again. Some times i need to hit the reset switch. THis happens EVERY TIME i try to close an application or IE window, or anything on the system.

    ANY IDEAS?!

everything works just fine in safe mode. I've disabled all of the startup options in msconfig. I went out and bought reg mech, to see if that would fix it. nope....

    any ideas?

    Thanks!

a very frustrated windows me user!

(ps, this board needs an icon of a guy pulling out his hair!)

Well, we're not a lot wiser yet, except that you can safely uncheck both loadqm and Wuauboot from msconfig. (You can check for your own windows updates, can't you?)

While you are there... list for us, what is still checked please?

What kind of maintenance have you done?

Downloaded and ran Adaware? (Make sure you run the update before you use it. Put a check mark beside all it finds and let it rid you of everything.

Have you done an online scan at housecall?

Cleaned out your temp files and did a scan disk and defrag?

I scandisked and defragged the drive...
I've run reg mech on the registry
I've run norton 2004, house call and sbsearch and destroy. All with nothing found. Norton was updated this morning.
I've tested ALL the hardware in the machine in another machine. All working AOK!

these are all the items msconfig lists as running at startup.

    ScanRegistry ... c:\windows\scanreg.exe /autorun
    taskmonitor ..... c:\windows\taskmon.exe
    pchealth ... c:\windows\pchelth\support\PCHschd.exe -s
    system tray
    hidserv
    loadqm

i'm at the point now where i'm thinking windows just has issues and formatting the drive. The stupid bit is, i just formatted the drive about a month ago, and now i'm having these problems.

I am not the primary user of the computer (my roommate is)... so i dont know what the hell he's done to it. -sigh-

    thanks for your help!

    Checked for updated drivers?

No chance you've got a system restore point to a time before this started happening huh?

Well, yes, I suppose if you've got nothing to lose...that too is an option?
