I have access to Outlook Express and can get my email and the kids can get onto MSN but when you click on Internet Explorer is says it has an error message in (blank) and then says to try restarting the computer. I have reinstalled Windows ME thinking that maybe there was something missing but no go. I have also done a ping test and all 4 packets were returned. It seems to be an error with IE itself, not an internet problem. Any ideas ? !

I would first try a repair of Internet Explorer - quite possible that the reinstall of ME did not replace all files.

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Internet Explorer > Remove.

In the dialogue box which appears select Repair.

When I go to add\remove there is no listing for Internet Explorer. When I check the "Window's" tab there is an option to install Outlook Express but I cannot find IE so I can't do it from their either. I can't seem to find anything on the ME disc itself to be able to install just Internet Explorer.

It would seem that Internet explorer is not installed - which is weird :(

I'm not familiar with ME, but it should be in Program Files - is it? If it is try running the .exe file from there (double click)

PeteC, you are correct. Program Files, Internet Explorer, IEXPLORE.EXE. Should also be able to see IE Icon: Start > Programs >

    Does IE run from there?
Agreed, but I have no idea why it is not there.

If it runs from Program Files - right click > Send to desktop (create shortcut)

    Does IE run from there?

Yes, it will run from there.
BTW, One can also delete the IE Icon from there  ( Start > Programs > )

If it runs from Program Files - right click > Send to desktop (create shortcut)

    That should do it!

I cannot open it from program files or anywhere else. I've tried from Start>Program Files>Internet Explorer, also from the desktop shortcut and also from Explore>Local Disc C>Program Files>Internet Explorer and no go. I've also done a search and clicked on the Iexplore.exe that came up there.
No matter where I try to open it I get the same error message:

" Explorer has caused an error in (unknown). Explorer will close now "

Is that all that it says? Or is there more to the message?

BTW, you'll find IE in the Add/Remove list under "Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools ".

Thats all there is to the message. Also , I looked under the add\remove and there is no " Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools" heading there at all. It appears that I no longer have IE anywhere on my machine. I have already re-installed ME and that didn't work. Is there any other way to get IE onto my machine ? I'm lost - nothing in the "help" file even deals with this problem. I need to get the internet on this computer - thanks so much for anything you can tell me.

Internet Explorer is on your m/c if the exe file exists. There is clearly something preventing it from opening - stating the obvious I know, but ....

I am moving this thread to the Security/Virus/Spyware forum for a while in the faint hope that the cause may be virus based.

Download HijackThis from the CWShredder link in my signature. Place it in a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet! Someone experienced with the logs will tell you what/how to fix.

If you have no internet access at all (Did you say MSN works? Is that MSN Explorer?), it will fit on a floppy.

cone--Wonder if your Winsock is corrupt. You can get a fix here
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm (Note different ones for different versions of Windows.)
I gather you have access to another PC, so could download to a floppy from there and bring it to the affected PC.

I tried the Winsock repair and that didn't do it. I did the HijackThis program on the other computer (the one with no internet access) and saved the log file to disk. When I tried to open the log file on this computer (the one that has internet access) my McAfee notified me that the Hijackthis.log was infected by the Exploit-URLSproof.gen trojan and deleted it. Itried it again and saved the log to a doc. and here's what I got. I am desperately hoping that you will be able to help me and really appreciate having your expertise to fall back on !

    Hi cone

Not sure if cleaning up the cws infection with cure the connection problems,
we can address that later. did you run cwsredder and is it version
    1.59.1 as of 6/28/2004
I have to assume since you have an old version of HijackThis it is also. plus they should preferably be in a folder of there own on C:\
    http://radiosplace.com/
    Has both

Go start run type msconfig > startup tab and re-enable anything you have disabled since the problems started, click apply then ok, dont restart untill after running cwsredder.

Run cwsredder click fix then restart the PC
    then get another log please

I ran Shredder and when it was was finished it said it had repaired 32 files in IE and after I rebooted I was able to open IE for a split second. It came up with the IE screen but when I changed the homepage to google I got the same error message as before and IE wouldn't open again. So, I ran Schredder again, then Hijack This and now here is the new log. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not but for the last couple of weeks we could not get Google to remain as the home page. We kept getting some homepage with an address about 40 characters long of numbers and symbols.

1: Go start run type msconfig > startup tab and re-enable anything you have disabled since the problems started, click apply then ok
Your missising some normal windows startups

    Lets get a closer look>

    Download: "StartDreck ", from here:
    This Link <<

Unzip to its own folder and start the program,

    Press 'Config'
    Press 'Unmark All'

    Check the following boxes only:
    Registry -> Run Keys
    Files> Autostart Folders
    System/drivers> Running processes
    Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file
(default is the same folder as the application)
    Exit StartDreck
And Post the log in this thread.

cone--I have not read all the posts in this thread again today, but if you do not already have it I would suggest downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, since you have have several activeX items I believe are spyware.
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Once installed, reboot and run HIiJackThis again and post.

I am no expert on HJT logs, but I think I would allow HJT to quarantine

    I also am suspicious about
    O16 - DPF: {8E0D4DE5-3180-4024-A327-4DFAD1796A8D} (MessengerStatsClient Class) - http://messenger.zone.msn.com/binar...StatsClient.cab
    O16 - DPF: {F58E1CEF-A068-4C15-BA5E-587CAF3EE8C6} (MSN Chat Control 4.5) - http://fdl.msn.com/public/chat/msnchat45.cab
    O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://utu.popcap.com/games/popcaploader_v5.cab
    especially the latter.
I think no harm will be done in quarantining them, since if you need them you should get them back the next time you use the sites involved.
And the O17 entry needs some input from you. The registry string itself looks OK, but it is directing you to ne1.res.dns.psi.net (Performance Systems International). Do you do business with that company, which is a domain name allocator? If not, I would quarantine that, too.
