voip - Internet telephony - recommendations?

hi,

what are the best application for using internet telephone?
just wanna see does it work here in Malaysia.. if they do im gonna save a lot of money! ( they are supposed to be free, right? )

Free - depends what you are doing. Computer user at one end to computer user at the other - free options available. Computer user at one end to telephone handset user at the other, you will probably need to use a portal that will charge for the service.

If Computer to Computer, you will probably need to make sure you and the person on the other end are using the same software. The voice traffic will go over the internet as normal TCP/IP traffic.

Free yes, but no garantee of the quality of service. TCP/IP was not designed for this kind of application. Full blown IP telephony commonly uses background systems (QoS systems in network switches for example) to customise the traffic and ensure VOIP is given priority. Without it I would expect you to get drop outs. You may also have problem with some ISP blocking ports that your IP telephony software might want to use.

 

I have just tried out free skype - "better quality speech than normal telephone" the hype said. On Dial-UP TCP/IP - probably the same you use
in Malaysia, it was like talking to an earless alien on Mars with a mouthful of
spaghetti.

I'm a huge fan of Skype and use it weekly to talk to a friend in Denmark, over broadband. It's fabulous.

this thing is a must have... it s so good.. i 'called' my fren in uk n germany frequently now.. its clear n FREE!!! its highly recommended!! use it while its free n available.. i heard that telco try to shut it down..
