Hello. For some reason, my OE messages aren't being saved in sent folder. I have it set for saving them, but it stopped saving them a few days ago. What can I do to fix that problem? Thanks. Val

Which version of Windows/Internet Explorer are you running?

There are a couple of potential reasons I can think of .....

A corrupted Sent Items.dbx (? need to know version of OE)

Too many messages stored in OE - OE starts to behave strangely if some of the storage folders become bloated.

I have Windows XP home edition and OE 6. I hadn't changed any OE settings before this happened. Thanks for your help. Val :)

A corrupted Sent Items folder could be causing your problems – this solution is based on an older version of OE, but works just as well – I have just tried it!

In OE right click on Local Folders > New Folder and in the Create New Folder dialogue box make a new folder ‘Old Sent Items’ > OK

Open your Sent Items folder, highlight one message > Edit > Select All

Drag the messages to the new folder ‘Old Sent Messages’.
Check that they ‘arrived’ safely and close OE.

In Windows Explorer search for *.dbx files – have the Search Hidden Files and Folders option turned on.

    Delete Sent Items.dbx

Open OE – the Sent Items folder will be re-created.

Send an email – to yourself if you like, and see if it is saved in the Sent Items folder.

If it is – great :) – drag the emails from the Old Sent Items folder back to the Sent Items Folder.

Send another email as before – if a copy ends up in the Sent Items Folder – problem solved and you can delete the Old Sent Items folder.

If not there is the possibility that you have too many emails in that folder and you should dump some of them, but only as a last resort, and only after doing a repair of OE and posting back ……

    To repair OE go ….

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow – note the space and have your XP install CD handy. This runs the System File Checker – it will run and just finish without any notification of what, if anything it has done. To see what has been done – if you are interested, look in Event Viewer.

HTH and please post back with your results.

Hello. I did everything you said up to the point of searching in Win Explorer for the *.dbx files. I made sure that the "show hidden files and folders" was enabled. It was checked when I looked at it. And I did a search, and it came up with nothing. So I unchecked "show hidden files and folders" and clicked apply, then checked it and clicked apply, then rebooted my computer, hoping that would enable it. And did another search, and still nothing came up. I searched under all files and folders.

When I made the "old sent items" folder, I didn't drag them, I clicked on the move to in the drop down menu. And then checked to see that they were in that folder, and they were. What is going on with my computer, when certain things are enabled in the settings, but aren't functioning the way they're supposed to? I know I should be able to find my dbx files. They have to be on my hard drive, so why can't explorer find them? Now I'm getting very concerned!!!

I did "compact all folders" yesterday in OE. Would that affect this? Grrrrrrr, I'm getting frustrated. When my settings start messing up, I get panicky. Please help me figure this out. Thanks. Val

If you're using XP try looking for your .dbx files here.
    c:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\long number with letters\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    If win98, look here.
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\long number with letters\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Pete's advice is good advice. Though it's not a sure thing that the sent items.dbx is corrupt, there's a pretty good chance that it is. If you're using WinXp and you still can't find them, it's search function is what I would call less than reliable. You could try downloading Agent Ransack and use it to search for them. Even if you've already found the .dbx files you might want to download it anyway. It's free and I think you'd be pleased with it.

    Val,

Zander pre-empted what I was about to post and had written :) - detail for detail, including AgentRansack. I was so pleased with that I upgraded to the Pro version.

To confirm the location of your OE message store go ....

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder - a box pops up with the location of your message store, which can be changed if you wish - mine is on another partition which is backed up - to another physical drive, hourly.

Hello. The folder (long number with letters) is there, but it's empty, so I can't go any further with that search.

PeteC said to do this Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder, but once in internet options, I don't see Maintenance. What gives here, is it just me or what?

BTW, after I moved my sent items to old sent items and rebooted, my email is being saved again. So that problem is solved. Do you think I should still download Agent Ransack? I'd like to be able to find my dbx files, where are they hiding??? :)

    Thanks for your help. Val

I have no idea if this will help, but in Windows Explorer, under "Tools ", then "Folder Options" and then the view tab, there is a box that says "Show hidden files & folders that must be ticked, and if you scroll down there is an option to untick "Hide Protected Operating System Files" (reccommended). I have had trouble with searches unless I've set both places to show files.

    Val,

Maybe my post was not clear - sorry about that .....

In OE go Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder.

Glad to hear your messages are now being saved - I would leave well alone now. No real idea what the cause was, unless you had several Mb's worth of sent emails (easy if you make a lot of attachments).

Give AgentRansack a try - it is freeware and a standalone program and so much better than the file search engine in Windows. As iI mentioned I upgraded to the Pro version for a few $$'s as I was so pleased with it.

I just wanted to let you know that I downloaded Agent Ransack, and was able to find my .dbx files. I was looking in the wrong place before, I got confused on the sequence of folders to open. But even so, the Windows search engine never found any .dbx files. Once I did a search with Agent Ransack, they came right up, and I was able to see where they were located, go there, and copied the files into another folder I made in My Documents. That's so I can get to it easily, when I want to do a back up.

So thanks to all for helping me, and thanks for recommending downloading Agent Ransack. I recommend it to others. And wow, it's free!!! Well, almost all of the programs I download are freeware -- I'm a cheapo I guess. Thanks. Val
    :)

Good! Thanks for the update :)

Agent Ransack is a little gem - you may also be interested in OE Backup to back up everything in OE.
