    Hi
Need help here desperately! Lately every program I open I get the illegal operation message and the program closes. They I have to re-boot and after a while it does it again. Most of the times it freezes after I try to get rid of this message and have to re-boot again. I havent put in any new stuff at all and did a check for viruses too. No idea where to go from here and this is driving me nuts!!! Any help????? It would be sooo appreciated!

When 98 goes from bad to worst, i just reinstall overtop and that usually (but not always) fixes weird problems. Stick the 98 CD in the drive and doubleclick setup.exe on the root of the CD. Make sure to install to the same place (eg; C:\WINDOWS) and install will keep all your programs and settings/drivers.
It does take an hour .... ugg.

    uh oh

problem with that is I don't have the 98 disc. My computer came installed with it already on it. So I don't have that option. If I did have the disc, I probably would have installed it 1,000 times by now. Any other way? Thanks for the reply

If it is an OEM machine (echk Dell) or similar, it will have the OS install files on the HD. Do you have a bunch of large .cab files somewhere ?

    Hi Rhody1
Any chance you can give us the exact error messages?
Do you know your system specs? IE, how much Ram...how big is your hard drive..how much space left...What size processor?
Have you done a scan for spyware?

Not sure i know what you mean by "zipped ", the install .cabs should be total about 121 MB. In the same directory with these cabs should be setup.exe.
Is this so ? If so, don't run it till we talk more cause could get into trouble.

to answer all questions yes I see setup and its 6K. I have 312 ram and AMD K63D processor. I know I have lots of space, I don't put much in here. I have checked for spyware and none here. I also did a scan (don't know if that would help) and did defrag. The message says Illegal Operation and I can't remember the rest, but it does say that the program will now close. After I click to get rid of the pop up error message, it keeps coming back and wont go away till I reboot. Hope I answered all these questons. Next time it does it (which is any time) I will get the whole message. Hope this can be fixed and thank you for the replies

    Mayby Daizy can help.

6KB is correct for the windows setup.exe program.
First thing to do if it becomes necessary to run setup.exe is get
your product key. Don't have it ?
    Start Run regedit
Navigate to this registry location :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft
    \windows\currentversion\

Open the branch and scroll down until you see

    ProductKey=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Write down that code exactly and store in safe place.

I DO NOT recommend running setup.exe just yet as i recall there may be an
issue with the setup .inf file on these machines. We may need to know exactly
model number and OS on machine.

Which programs give the fatal exception ? Can you open Notepad ?
How did you check for spyware if all programs will not run ?
You also did "scan" and "defrag" and they RAN, so you are not telling us everything.
Be very clear in which programs cause the error, then maybe more can help.

    Best

This just may be a simple matter of one program causing a conflict, and reinstalling windows may not help. I recommend this to find the culprit. Install TweakUI. The instructions on how to install are on the webpage. When it is installed, it will appear in Control Panel, open it. Click on the Paranoia tab. Look to the bottom, and you will see 'Illegal Operations', put a checkmark for 'log application errors to Faultlog.Txt. Then click on Apply. This file will be created in C:\Windows\Faultlog.Txt.
When the Illegal Operation next occurs, open the Faultlog.Txt file and post the contents on here.

Hi, sorry for not replying sooner but I was away on vacation. This happens in every program I run. It will do it for a while then will stop for awhile then it comes back. It happens with my mail program (Incredimail) and also with Outlook Express. A few times it happens in Explorer too. Yes I can open notepad. I checked for spyware with Spybot. I have used Incredimail for over a year and this never happened. I have only used the mail programs and Explorer later and its happening. Today I used the computer for the first time in a week and so far it hasn't happened. Tempermental????

Let me explain what an illegal operation is. It occurs when a program in memory tries to write to memory already being used by another program, windows detects this, stops it and gives you the error message. By clicking on Details, you learn which application tried to do this.
Installing TweakUI as suggested in my previous post, and enable the Faultlog.Txt option, this file will be created in the Windows folder.
From the above quote, you can see that is exactly what you need to do, as it will log all Illegal Operations, what programs did it and to what. This is the info that will help fix your problem. It may not be something that you start up yourself, it could be something running at startup.

Ok I downloaded and installed TweakUI. I also click the 'log application errors to Faultlog.Txt. Now how do I see that txt?? I can't find it anywhere. There is so much stuff in this Tweak that I don't know what to click and what to unclick. Do I have to wait for the error message again? Sorry to sound so dumb but I have no idea what this software is that I installed.

TweakUI does what it's name implies, does tweaks for you.
Yes, you will have to wait for an error message to occur before Faultlog.Txt is created. When it is created it will be in the Windows folder.
This way we can get an exact error message.

You do not need to get rid of it. Perhaps an uninstall, reboot, then install again. Did you happen to upgrade it in the near past?
BTW, these are invalid page fault errors, different from an illegal operation. It is trying to write to a page of memory that does not exist.

Yes Mark I did upgrade it a while ago (jeeze now that I think about it) I did uninstall it and put it in again to. If I dont use it and use another mail program do you think this will help? I hate not using it but I hate the way I get this messages and the freeze part too. What do you think I should do?? Maybe another upgrade (when they have it) will help???

It does look like Incredimail doesn't like your windows, or is buggy. It is the only thing causing the Invalid Page Faults according to the log. Using another email program would be a good work around. Perhaps you might be interested in Thunderbird? Free and no ad/spyware.

Mark I did download thunderbird and just never used it, but I will now. You think if Incredimail sends another update that this mail program will be ok them? It was always ok before. But for now I will change email programs and not Incredimail. Thank you so much for all the help, you have lots of patience!
