This is hardware and XP related - I think it's more XP Forum though..

My PSU or Mobo died (90% sure it was the PSU but great excuse to upgrade everything!) so I have got new parts and need to do the dreaded motherboard swap. The MOBOs are very different, the old one is a ECS K7S5A for Athlons and the new one is a ASUS P4P800 for Intels.

I understand that PLUG and PLAY mau have issues when mobos are swapped. I have read this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314082

And may try the fix, but don't really know about swapping out MOBOs under XP. Should swapping MOBOs allow me to happily switch on and XP loads? If not is there anything I should do first or is it the re-install Windows - which is a pain as I have to re-patch to SP1 ec and reload lots of programs..

Any advice would be gratefully received.

It is most unlikely that you will be able to simply boot to the Windows install on your existing hard disk as XP will not see the 'right' hardware, but you can obviously try.

If nothing works and a far better than evens chance that it won't, you will need to make a fresh install of XP and re-activate. See the sticky post at the top of the forum re. updates on CD.

Put the new Power Supply in and burn all your back ups. Then swap boards. You have a 50/50 chance of being okay! (For diagnostic purposes, I've swapped mobos- I have the quirkiest ECS mobo ever made!) Post back, and let us know how it goes! Best of luck!

Do "In-Place Upgrade" for MotherBoard Swaps

To be really safe, you really should do an "In-Place Upgrade to force hardware re-detection ". XP is supposed to be better than 2K on MB changeouts, but it's still not great at "Plug and Play" MB style. See ->>

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/other/motherboard/winxp.htm

and follow "solution #2 ". It's worked everytime for me. Hopefully, you have a SP1 slipstreamed XP install CD or you will have to reinstall SP1 and patches.

    From the URL above...
    What an In-Place Upgrade Changes:

    · It does NOT change the installed components and programs.

    · It does NOT change any passwords.

    · It does NOT change third-party registry entries.

    · It rolls back any hotfixes, service packs, and Microsoft Internet Explorer upgrades to their base versions.

    · It refreshes the registry and restores default registry values.

    · It reapplies default permissions.

    · It reregisters Component Object Model (COM) components and Windows File Protection (WFP) files.

    · It reenumerates Plug and Play devices, including the hardware abstraction layer (HAL).

    · It reenumerates and changes drive letters, based on the current drives and partitions that are seen during the in-place upgrade and on the rules that are documented in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
