Only you can determine what an acceptable level of safety vs. limitations is for you. I think it's important to have all the information available about your choices for security. Both pages tell you explicitly how to lock down or free up your browser. Me, I'm a KISS user. I use NIS, keep it up to date, and try to use common sense. You cannot use the internet without some risk, but you can make it so inconvenient for your computer to be compromised that you are relatively safe.

Yeah, I guess that's the right answer. After posting my question, I gradually realized that I would have to answer it myself. I will actually have to look at each individual security setting and try to figure out what it does, and whether I need it or not in my particular situation. I think I'll just stay the way I am for now, and pray a lot. I also use NIS, and awhile back I followed somebody's advice for setting my IE security settings. I cannot remember what I did, but it seems to work okay.

If some one is using AOL only for web browsing, (& WinXP) are they still subject to the security issues of IE ?

    Hello Hoot,

Yes. Aol uses IE as a shell - meaning Aol uses IE as a base. Easily tested, change an AcriveX setting to prompt in IE - you will have to answer that prompt.
