    Can the machines access internet?
If they can, I feel the most simple way to transfer files is using MSmessenger because we do not need much setup. Just download and transfer.
Otherwise, you can try sharing a folder in one of them and then you can use that share to transfer files. This article tells you how to share a folder in 2000:

The only thing I would add is that for connecting 2 similar devices (like 2 PCs) you must use a crossover network cable rather than a normal one.

Easy enough to figure out which type you have. Compare the two ends and if the wires are in the same order at both ends (color coded so easy to tell) then you have normal and need a different one.

Is this going to happen with the same machines you plan to connect to the D-Link router/switch?

If so and if you can wait on that, you'll be able to easily transfer the files after your network is up and running.

If not, post back and I'll give you step-by-step instructions for just setting up the 2 PCs with a network cable connecting them.

I just looked at the Kb article and it assumes the PCs are already part of a network and that the network is set up using a domain controller. Won't work for your needs and no wonder it was confusing to you.
