    Hi Pete,

Thanks very much for posting back with your results, and glad you were able to figure out what needed to be done. Good going!

I discovered one more step is needed. You have to compact your mail file after you restore it from Norton AV or the data with the offending signature is still in there even after the file is removed.

    Can't get past step 4

    Hi,

I am trying to get past step 4:
    3. Open the "inbox" file using a text editor. I used UltraEdit-32 (http://ultraedit.com).
    4. Go to the end of the Inbox file and delete the chunk that belongs to the infected attachment. (The infected attachment is most likely in the last email received.)

But i open the file in ultraedit and it is all hex code (i think). The file is too big to open in other apps (344 megs).

Does anyone have suggestions for other apps or how to use ultraedit.

    Thanks!

    Update!

I disabled the scanning of Inbox and can open my email normally. I deleted some suspect emails. I just am no longer sure if I have the virus or not. I have disabled the scanning of the Inbox for now and run FxNetsky.exe for Norton. It doesn't detect the virus and I see no sign of the files talked about in the Manual removel instructions. But is I enable scanning of the Inbox my system slows down and reports finding W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc. How can I tell if I have the virus or not??

    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi Jason,

Are these the instructions you used to remove the virus:
    W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc

Have you done a find for W32.Netsky.P@mm!enc?

If when you enable E-mail protection and the virus is detected, it would appear that the virus is still on your system. However, you say that a thorough NAV scan reports no virus? Very strange indeed...

Here is another procedure to remove the Virus, from the TrendMicro site:
    Worm_Netsky.P

You don't really need E-mail Protection as long as AutoProtect is enabled.

Altho you didn't say what Version of NAV you're using, perhaps this Symantec Article will be of interest:
Internet browsing slows down after installing Norton AntiVirus 2004
