I'm running Windows 2K SP4. I frequently leave the computer in standby (sleep) mode. If I'm gone and the power goes off, I'd like a battery backup power supply that will Wake the computer and then close Windows down before it shuts off the power. I don't need to operate on battery for any length of time and I don't run any applications while I'm away. I just want it to wake from standby, close Windows, and then shut the power off.

I bought an Energizer brand UPS that connects to the computer through an USP with software but the manufacturer tells me the software is not compatible with the power features of Win 2k -- so it just shuts the power off without closing down Windows. I suspect that could be a little risky.

I looked up APC but their website seemed ambiguous. Is it theoretically impossible in Win2k or did I just buy the wrong brand?

If you use the APC software, it will do what you want from Standby or Hibernation on XP.

I don't think I'll change to XP in order to be able to buy an APC UPS that will close Windows in Standby. I didn't expect it to be an unusual use for an UPS. Oh, well, I've done without it this long I guess I can just continue. Thanks for the response.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear with my answer. When running from an APC UPS:

Yes, the APC software will do an orderly 2K shutdown when the PC is in Standby in the event of extended power loss.

If a PC is running XP, the APC software will not only do an orderly shutdown from Standby but also from Hibernation if the PC is in that state.

I realize you were only interested in 2K but had added the XP bit since the threads are read by quite a few folks and some of them probably deal with both operating systems.
