I am using Windows XP Pro on a dual processor (500 MHZ each) pentium computer. I have a generic model, Norcent, 48X12X48 burner and am able to select 48X as my burning speed. The problem is that some times the burning process fails or if it works, it takes me about 5:30 minutes to burn a cd. I use nero, Im not sure if I need to change a setting or download an update but it seems like my computer always burns at 16X speed. Anyone have any ideas?

If this is too basic or obvious, I apologise .....

You are using 48x CD-R blanks? If you set 48x in Nero and insert a 16x Nero will recognise the speed of the blank and write at that speed. The write speed is shown in the Nero burning progress dialogue box.

    Possible resolutions .....

Try a different brand of CD-R blank, preferably 'badged' - I've burnt over a thousand CD's on Zero Defects CD-R's in the past couple of years without a single coaster.

Update Nero (which version?) and/or uninstall, reboot and reinstall.

My version is 5.5.8.2 bundled. I use 48X and can select it as an option. Its just that my computers tends to go a lot slower than 48X and sometimes the burning process fails. I will try to update the program, but I know my CPU should be able to burn at 48X. What settings do you use? I always use 48X or 52X cds :)

I use the last update to Nero 5.5 prior to the introduction of 6.0 - 5.5.10.54 and always burn at the fastest speed the burner will allow - generally 48x with 48x disks. I have an Asus CRW-4816A and also use a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D.

Maybe your cpu is not that good. 500 is kind of slow and Dual wont do any good when burnning CDs.

There are a lot of factors on burning. First how are your drives setup? What are you burning? Large files or small files? Are you burning from CD to CD? Or, from hard drive to CD?

Really, nobody is burning too fast. Depending upon what you are burning 5:30 may not be bad. If you are getting fails, it could be the media. Slow it down.

I just got the newest version of Nero and I am going to try it out and see what happens. I have a question, I noticed Nero has its own ASPI driver, is this used with the Windows ASPI drivers or is it a substitute? I am thinking this might be the reason burning takes 5:30 minutes. I am burning off of the hard drive by the way.

    Thanks!

Out of interest I burned a 638 Mb file to a 48 x Zero Defects blank CD-R at 48 x from the hard drive with my Asus CRW-4816A 48x/16x/48x ....

Time to burn 2:45 mins - Total time including verification 4:51 mins

Your 5:30 mins looks quite normal given that it includes verification.

My CPU is 2.08 Ghz AMD with 1.5 Gb RAM - CPU usage peaked at 4%.

Nero uses it's own ASPI layer AFAIK.
